Need to update my wardrobe, it's not bad but it's pretty bland and uninspired.

At the moment I'd say my style is 30's (in terms of age not decade) - H&M, some Next, A&F from when I was in the States, some 'skater' style stuff (i.e. Element, Carharrt, Vans).

Am acutely aware I'm not fashionable to any extent, but want to become more 'aware' of the more up to date stuff - not things you can easily get on the high street for example.

As for style I would say probably - mature rocker style (i.e. Allstars, Johnson Motors T's (ala Dave Grohl)), not really into the 'younger' indie style (i.e. skinny jeans, tiny tees etc) - don't want to look like an older guy trying to look young!

Hmm anyway - just wanted some pointers as to what brands, styles, looks to keep my eye out for - want to become more fashion 'aware'.

Cheers

Get down to Hughes's they have a large selection of flannel shirts for £4 each! (well you mentioned Dave Grohl) :p

Now that's an offer even I couldn't resist. They do jeans in there as well for about £6 a pair. :p

Flannel shirts?! Well I wasn't quite going for the Earl Hickey look. :p

As for H&M, Topshop, Burton etc that's pretty much where I want to be moving away from...

I seem to be shopping in H&M more and more recently, Guess isn't too bad either when I actually have some money.

I went in Topman at the weekend and felt alienated by what seems to be fashionable right now. Tight jeans, thin ties and garish things  I even visited the Topman website and when I saw the images that are cycling on the homepage I actually thought "what on earth are they wearing?", I'm scared by this as it's something that my dad would say.

Gay, because you keep putting "aware" in flying commas and use phrases like "mature rocker style".

Sorry, but what are "flying commas"? Are they dumbed-down GCSE speak for apostrophes, or indeed speech marks?

OP, just take a walk down the high street and see what you like.

Scotts is a good shop, I maily go for the lacoste or ralph lauren polo look with dark denim at the moment seeing as its summer

Thanks for the replies of those people who had useful suggestions.

There's a lot of latent hostility on this board these days, seems you can't ask a simple question without barracking or snide comments - sad reflection on our society I guess.

It depends on your budget really, that site that Wardie posted has some good things but some are a tad over priced. I know that Debenhams (sp) have got buy one get one half price on polo shirts, Selfidges also sell a lot of branded stuff but these will definitely be expensive. Have you got a designer outlet near you? These sell designer brands quite cheap and the stock they have is less worn than the high street stuff. Failing that go to TK Max :p

Thanks Richard - I kind of use those places at the moment - like Duffer from Debenhams, John Rocha, Paul Smith, Ted Baker, River Island.

Was looking for some ideas from people about other areas to look in - just a prompt, doesn't have to be specific - obscurer things like Johnson Motors for example ( a brand of tshirt that Dave Grohl likes to wear but cannot be bought on the high street ).

vintage shops, find one near you and prepare to get lost for 6 hours and you will look like a hero

Sounds like a plan, forgot we have one locally.

The problem I find is that everyone and his dog (i.e. Topman, Matalan, Next, etc) have flooded the market with cheap reproduction vintage style tshirts (ooh that was close, I almost used flying quotes there, sorry JimpsEd) so everyone is wearing them.
