Hi guys,

its been a nearly 4 years since i got this pc (e6400,2gb,1950xtx) and its time for an upgrade as im going back to uni. Im not really sure whats good anymore as i stopped really looking at gaming on a pc in favour of my xbox, however i started playing wow and its brought all the pc gaming feelings back.

So i need a system ideally less than £800(can go a bit over) that will play games (BFBC2 when i get the pc, Wow although that doesnt take much and some other games such as tf2 and a bunch of other stuff i have on steam)

Id like a Intel system with a Ati graphics card, i need everything but monitor, keyboard and mouse oh and windows 7.

Your help would be very much appreciated. Thanks :D

what size is your existing monitor/resolution? so we can get the correct card for the job

Cheers for the replies, ive got a couple of questions.

Is the 5830 an underclocked 5850 or is there a big step up in terms of performance?

Speaking of performance, as im not going to play some games and mess about on the net, will i need quadcore or will i get away with dual core?

Next up are intel the way forward?, when i last bought my pc intel were miles ahead with c2d, how is it now?

thanks

the 5830 is a cutdown chip, less stream processors, this will hopefully explain more.

AMD is the way forward at the moment, as Intel are going to be changing the socket designs soon, making any upgrade-ability doubtful.

Here is an AMD based build the OP might want to consider:

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition ~ £136

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-244-AM

Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H ~ £105

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-251-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782

Does symmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X/8X and has USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0 too.

OR

Asus M4A89GTD PRO ~ £106

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-392-AS

Does symmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X/8X and has SATA 3.0 too. It is meant to be better for overclocking than the Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H.

4GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ~ £100

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-203-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

Antec TruePower New Modular 650W Power Supply ~ £85

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-117-AN

This is made by Seasonic and has 4 PCI-E power connectors.

HIS iCooler V ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 ~ £233

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-004-HS

OR

2XHD5770 1GB ~ £254

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-011-HS

Antec 300 ~ £41

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-101-AN

Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache ~ £50

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-244-WD

SATA DVD rewriter ~ £15

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-099-SA&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=951

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-090-LG&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=951

The total comes to around £765 to £787 excluding delivery.

A pair of HD5770 1GB cards can challenge an HD5870:

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1105/1/

The OP can get a Core i5 750 and a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5 if they want an Intel processor:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-299-IN

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-203-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495

The Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5 does symmetrical Crossfire or SLI at PCI-E 2.0 8X/8X but lacks USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0 and socket 1156 is EOL in Q1 2011 too.

If the OP goes with a single HD5850 1GB graphics card the build will cost them around £796 excluding delivery.
