Haha, I can actually use it for real.
My dad is a farmer, he makes hay for a living. I've never heard of a 'needle of hay'

It's just a very old proverbial phrase. The older version is "a needle in a bottle [i.e. bundle] of hay". Sir Thomas More used a variant of it in 1532: "to go look for a needle in a meadow".

I don't know where you'd find proof, but here's an example of the term being used.
Finding a particular needle of hay would be harder.

Actually, third option and 5 minutes tops.
Burn the hay stack.
A hay stack will burn for days. Believe me.
Really? I would have thought it to be fairly quick burning thing.
But either way.. a lot less man hours![]()
I always assumed it was a sewing needle, and funnily enough there was an episode of Brainiac last week or the week before asking what the easiest way to find said needle was
1. Setting the whole lot on fire
2. Putting the hay in water and finding it that way
3. Sifting through the hay and passing from one pile to another.
I believe the setting fire to it option worked out the fastest![]()
Pass haystack through MRI machine. Collect needle. Done.
What is it's an aluminum needle?
Weird, they seem like intelligent people on that show.Mythbusters done it first I believe.

I'd understand if it was Brainiac thats a kids show but I could tell you burning a haystack would be the quickest way...without attempting it. Its just obvious.
