Hi Folks,

Apologies if this is in the wrong section: Mod - please move if needs be.

Basicially, i'm out of contract with Virgin Media now.

Currently paying £74 a month for what used to be the XL bundle (BT Sport etc) 100mb BB and Weekend calls (this is including line rental)

Has anybody got any experience of negotiating a "better" deal with them? I've got the Superhub and associated box, but with the newest range of boxes and routers now out, I thought it might be time to change.

Thoughts? Is it a case of calling up and threatening to leave etc?

Anybody had any success using a different approach?

Ask them for a deal, phone up and go for moving house.thinking of leaving, explain yourself and see what they offer then compare that to new customer offers elsewhere.

Yeah make sure you go to the 'thinking of leaving us' option.

Have a few other deals written down from other providers to give it credibility and don't think you're blowing your hand if you admit you'd stay for the right deal toward the start of the discussion. They are rewarded to keep people on :)

I have 150mb and basic Tivo for 17.50/m plus the phone line which I got for 140 for the year. All after a friendly discussion with them.

I went through this over christmas and had absolutely no joy, they either were willing to change my slow tivo box to the new v6 box for free, or were willing to offer a discount that meant that I was going to be paying more than I already was, albeit for a few channels I wouldn't watch. They wouldn't budge at all. Ended up cancelling and going with BT got a really good deal out of them.

What sort of deal did you get Goodie?

I've just spoken to them and its a similar story - however, reading around, I could, potentially, beat the system.

My account is only in my name.

I can cancel - telling them i'm moving out (i'm going to say i'm renting the property to a relative. (i'm well out of contract now)

My wife can then get a new contract on a introductory offer (different bank account) I've read a couple of posts where people have done this successfully.

I don't understand why they don't just offer these deals to existing customers?

The key is to cancel, giving them 30 days notice and they will call you back usually after 1 to 2 days. Explain that you cancelled since they are not interested in keeping you and you can go else where for less money, and new virgin customers get better deals. Do NOT take the first offer if you are not happy, they will call back again if you say you need to do some thinking.

I've done this successfully twice in the last month, I got my in law's bill down from £130 to £68, and my friends from £112 to £70. They all end up with better broadband and TV boxes.

I'm paying £44 for XL TV , 70m broadband and weekend calls (Inc line rental). It took a lot of hassle to get it :)

It's the retentions department you need as they're the only ones who have the discretion to cut you a good deal. Getting through to them is a game of brinksmanship with the regular support/account people and you usually have to threaten to leave or actually cancel to get there.

I cancelled.

Got a call back a few days later.

Offered Complete TV, 200MB, All landline calls (excluding International) and will give ONE v6 box.

We will also have a Tivo box as well.

£82 all in. I will most likely cancel though anyway.
