Negotiating salary with a new employer....

Here we go, getting somewhere.

They have just got back to me and offered me the role but at a reduced salary than what I am currently on.

Basically £X - 10%

They say we discussed that my current salary was more than what they were willing to offer for the experience I have during the interview process which i'm a bit confused about as all that they asked was what my current package was.

If I'd have known they couldnt give me an increase on what i'm on I probably wouldn't have bothered - plus I emailed them prior to ask them what the salary range was and they wouldn't give it me.

They have said they suggest reviews at 6 and 12 months to look at progression against the areas which they feel I need some training and development with associated pay rises.

What do you think? Am I just being low-balled? The person has asked for me to call them but they have attached an offer letter etc. I'm not sure why they think I would go for a pay cut and a decrease in holidays.

I suppose I've nothing to lose by saying I was looking for a minimum of 10% to make the move worthwhile. I'm under no immediate pressure to move from my current job as my contract has been extended. Baaahhhh this is head waffling.

The alarm bells would be ringing when they claimed your currently salary is more than what they are offering even though this conversation didn't take place.

Don't be fooled by these suggested reviews and 6 and 12 months, you don't know if they're serious or just trying to get you to sign - very easy for them to fob you off if it isn't contractual.

Either they're low balling you or they're wasting your time. Say you want 10% over your current salary and that's the lowest you'll go. Don't get sucked into false promises by them.

That's what I was thinking.

The only conversation we had regarding salary was me divulging my current salary and holidays and then having a quick conversation about how my holidays were very generous at the moment and that they don't offer that much, which I acknowledged was fine and that I knew I probably wouldn't be able to get as many holidays at another employer!

I'm definitely not going to accept though for what they have offered so I'm just trying to think about the best way to respond.

Couldn't agree more.

It sounds like they want to give you the lowest offer. I think you need to be clear with them in terms of what you're after. If they are mucking you around, then you need to ask yourself is that the sort of company you want to work for?

Yes, any hiring package deals must come in writing (at least in my book). Some people price their holidays themselves, and would ask for a fixed sum of money as compensation or the equivalent amount in perks like insurance, pension, gym membership, whatever, to compensate for lost days off; another angle would be request them to do it, i.e. politely ask them to give you their best nearest offer to your current package, and go from there.

Make sure it's been signed off by the decision maker too, in some shape or form. :p

well I wouldn't bother with them tbh...

and I wouldn't reply right away either, if there is some date in the future you need to decided by then leave it till then and drop them a mail - or just wait till they call you

General advice...

Before you approach any controlled career move, by that I mean one that isn't enforced on you by circumstance, you need to be clear in your mind about what good looks like. Be realistic, but have a clear view in your own mind of what you want from your next role, be it money, benefits, career progression etc. DO NOT get into the mindset of "well this job pays X" as in most companies outside highly structured organisations and government roles, that is rarely the case. If you are good, someone who fits the role well then companies will try and secure you.

Too many people go to interviews without any clear forethought and then wonder why 12 months down the line they really aren't that satisfied and feel they have just got into another job with a bit more money that isn't really gong anywhere. I appreciate that as you progress in life this becomes easier (if you have developed) but everyone should be in this mindset. If asked what is your package today do not be afraid to respond with "let me tell you what I have in mind" and then lay out what would make the decision easy for you. If they come back with we need to know what you're on don't be afraid of asking why that is important and never lose sight that any career move is a negotiation. I don't make this stuff up, Ive been doing it long enough on both sides of the table to know how these things can go.

I spoke to one of the managers before I left work today.

Explained that the offer was too low salary wise and that there must have been some confusion or crossed wires in the interview as my current salary wasn't explored further than me divulging it.

I said that the job sounds great but it would need to be an offer over my current salary for me to justify moving roles as well as taking a decrease in holidays.

They seemed to want to work something out and said that they would speak with the other senior managers tomorrow and get back to me. I'm still not sure if they will come back with another offer or not but finding it hard to see how they will offer me a min of 20% more than their original offer to get to near to what I'd be willing to take.

Will have to see how it plays out tomorrow.

its just one firm - I hope you're still speaking to recruiters and sending your CV to other places at the same time still... if you've decided you want to move then the more options you have the better

push for the package you want now, don't accept nonsense about how they'll review in 6 or 12 months - if they don't want to pay for you then walk away and try elsewhere

Am doing dowie mate yes still on the look out for roles in the area but under no pressure to move yet. Will see what they come back with as a counter-offer (if they do) and go from there.

Less pay AND less holidays? Seems like lose/lose to me?

More like Lose/Lose/Lose as if they are having to really push the boat out to got close to his current salary one would assume that there won't be a huge pot of gold waiting at the next pay review either and he'll be stuck on an unsatisfactory salary indefinitely.

Sorry yeh, there was a bit more to'ing and fro'ing but I accepted the new job for more money in the end so was worth fighting back.

Just a tiny bit less than what I wanted but overall happy with the move as the pay prospects are much better here as i'll definitely be getting pay reviews each year and the role offers up more challenges and will be overall better for my CV and career all round.

Now onto supporting the Mrs as she has been invited for a 2nd interview at an employer and is looking at a tidy pay increase if she's successful. Happy days all round if she does as it will be pay rise city in the R.O.S.S.I household!
