Can anyone explain the advantages of the new Nehelem chip/system?

Also, when will it be released?

I am currently looking at building a new system, and am now wondering if i should wait a while instead?

faster doo.... :rolleyes: waiting is always the best option , but then how long can u wait. if u have pc that can last few more months i suggest wait
 
The codename is "Nehalem" the range is i7.

It's a new architechture, like core2 duo was after P4. it's supposed to offer a similar step up as well ;)
 
I understand that the first chips released wont be overclockable....is that correct?

If so, how long until chips are released that will be o/c capable?

Will this be a couple of months that will turn into several months? :o
 
I'm looking forward to Nehalem, but not for the i7 chips, but for the bargains to be had when everyone rushes to sell off their Core 2 Quads for cheap. Should be some corking deals around. My 3ghz E2180 should last just fine till then. A ~£100 12MB cache quad from the MM or that auction site would be fantastic and I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen. Here's hoping anyway.

very interesting, thanks for the idea.

Chances are that i7 will be out of my price range. I only had a core2 for less than 6 months. Tbh I'm not that excited about it ...

Being a couple of steps behind the cutting edge can really pay off, I'm all about bang for buck. No need to pay a premium for performance that I have no use for.

Going to have to start posting more regularly though, I need access to the members market within the next few months.
 
way i see it is that my current rig will continue to do everything i want for a while yet
when nehalems advantages meet my needs... thats when i will upgrade
 
I built my machine a couple of months ago, after my previous 3500+ machine lasted me for the past 3-4 years (Although, A few months before getting the new machine, I spent £50 on the old one for new mobo 4000+ and x800xtpe, I sold the old mobo, 3500+ and 6800GT for £100)

I expect this machine to last me the same amount of time, too. With only, possibly a graphics upgrade in about 2 years? But as always, I'll play it by ear, I'll only upgrade when something's annoying me, or there's something I can't play, on the settings I want.

Q4 08' for the initial and expensive 'Extreme Editions' and Q1 09' for the mainstream stuff. There was an announcement recently that the launch date was brought forward, but with the lack of competition they can afford to take their time. Of course, the 45nm process (followed by 32nm at the tock) makes the Nehalem range more profitable for Intel so it's in their interest to switch in the not too distant future.

Be prepared to pay through the nose though... new processor, new motherboard, new memory, plus all the surrounding stuff such as coolers/waterblocks etc - it will add up. Me, I'll just sit this one out, I'm a best bang for the buck kind of person and only just got my Q6600. Look forward to the first reviews though :)

Nehalem won't have much better performance in games though, so unless they clock higher or is competitive in another way there won't be much to go for :)
 
As they are a completely new architecture they won't be held back by the same problems as the last Intel Quads.

From what I've heard they overclock very nicely but are also very quick stock.

Looks like I will wait then.

Looking at spending around £1400 on my system, with another £600 on monitor and sound system (sssshhhhhh, dont tell the wife ;))
