Neighbour building a brick house/building in their back garden

Wait until it's finished then report it,if it isnt meant to be there then he will have to take it down and it will teach him a lesson to ask before he builds something that big,if its ok for the structure then tough :)

Ah yea i forgot to post the pics, heres a couple, looks a lot smaller than it is in real life

The thing im concerned about is the height, i dont mind if its out the way but when your in the garden and look out it seems to me like its going to be quite high judging by how high the door is. If it was the high of the door i wouldn't mind at all. Im pretty sure no permission was sought tho, unless the council are just slow at updating their records

Difficult to tell from that really. With no plans online you can't tell what the actual layout of the building will be either :/

I'd deffo speak to the planning office.

Or you/your sis could do the really crazy thing and actually talk to your neighbour about it?

"Hiya - I see you've got some building work going on...."

A conversation should pretty much include all the info you need after that.

Unless of course you're a true modern Brit and don't talk/know/acknowledge your neighbour at all. ;)

When I built my Log cabin which is less than 2.5m in height to the ridge, I was advised by the planning office to seek planning permission because it was within 2m of the boundary fence. This was despite it replacing a shed of the same size in the same place!

From your photos I would suggest that if he is building up to the fence he will need PP. If you have not received the letter that does not mean to say he has not applied and been accepted. Basically if you receive permission approval you have 3 years (I think) to build it or you have to re-apply.

If you go to your local council website, you can search planning applications and their condition by postcode. Slap in your postcode and see if they have applied and the status. If there's nothing there contact your planning office and mention that they might be building a permitted development within 2m of the boundary and they will be on them like a hawk...
You were incorrectly advised. The rules are clear. Under 2.5m does not need permission, even if it's 1cm from the boundary.

2.5m is pretty tall you know! From the pics that door way is (I'd guess) around 2m as it looks a similar height to the shed that's already there. So unless he adds half a metre on top of that again, it's unlikely to exceed the permitted height.

whats your problem with this structure ?

he thinks it will make his house depreciate in value or harder to sell other than that nothing.

imo you should be allowed to build whatever you want on your own land so long as it's not hurting anybody else.

i hate people who put forward complaints when you apply for planning permission.

for all you know they could genuinely not know what the correct procedure is (elderly person) or have employed a cowboy builder who say's everything is fine and no planning permission is needed, etc.

this would be the ********* way of doing it.

as other's have said why not just ask the neighbour?

Im not around that way very often, and when my sister ask she said he just laughed it off, i would have got details if i had spoken to him, let me say, i dont care what people build in their garden, its your garden, build what you want. My concern, which i mentioned earlier was that it may interfere with the selling of my house. At the moment you look out the back on to woodland, but he might be building a 18 story block of flats with waterslides coming down the side for all i know. I intend to ask when im there whats going on. Its interesting to know for future you can knock up any thing as long as its not over 2.5m high tho.

btw, my garden was presentable before she moved in, and theres a lawn mower in that shed:p

it looks like a normal one storey outbuilding to me, possibly a home office or some such thing.

if your really worried about selling your house then i would be trying to make your own house as presentable as possible first without worrying about others.

e.g. lick of paint, maintaining the garden, tidying up, etc?

therefore i would be more concerned about your own back garden, it looks absolutely terrible in comparison to your neighbours, even though they have a load of building works going on.

Keep reading the thread title as brick **** house. Most annoying.

Plant a tree on your side of the fence, that'll cover it up eventually.

Are you sure about that?

My local council planning officer suggested that as mine was within 2m of the boundary (actually it was about 600mm) I would need permission.

If he was pulling a fast one in order to gain the council another 150 quid of planning fees, then by god I will strike him down with 150 quid's worth of lightening bolt ;)
