Neighbour Noise

Not your usual problem though .... my next door neighbour has been claiming that she's been having issues with noise from me!

I know, I know I am like most people on here and have computers with lots of fans and harddisks some of which are on 24/7 and some have surround sound systems with sub-woofers etc so it sounds perfectly plausible ... but it really isn't me!

I live in a semi-detached house and she lives in the other half of this. This has been going on a while and initially we did think it was my server but we've proved that is not the case as she still has the noise when the system is off (at the wall socket). In fact I have been telling her that I have everything off overnight, which I have had with all computers and home entertainment kit powered off by 22:30 at the latest in case it was causing the issue ... but she was still getting the noise and supposedly it is particularly bad overnight.

This has been very upsetting for her as it's affecting how her and her kids have been sleeping but we really don't know what is causing it. We established this afternoon that she can still hear the sound (as can her mother) even if both my house and hers have had their master power switch thrown on the fuse box ... which, with no UPSes, kind of puts paid to the arguement that my computers are causing it.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? We have been told that it is possible to get noise with wind blowing across/into the boiler out vent but I'd gave thought I would get the noise too then?

Can't you go round and listen to whatever noise it is she says she is experiencing?

Just tell her it ain't your house that's causing the problem, you have done your best.

Unless you really want to help her out?

I would want to sort the problem. It could be something to do with his house that they've overlooked.

It doesn't seem like she's being nasty or anything so I can't see what the problem with continuing to look into it is.

Have you been round and experienced it yourself? Is it worse in one room compared to another? How about upstairs/downstairs. Any difference?

Have you got a loft?

You've proved it's not you. If she still has a problem then she needs to work out where the noise is coming from (at least generally), if she can't do that and won't let you then tough.

Sounds like her house is possessed by satanic spirits, it probably just needs exorcising. Common fault.

Get a priest in.

Bet it's the 3 way valve in her airing cupboard... Bet it's the solenoid on that. Actually... but with the master switch off.??... meh.

Don't think you've said what sort of noise it is. Has she moved in recently or have you?

Noises always sound worse at night.

Look for external factors:- Airports, railways, underground trains, nearby factories, nearby sub stations.

Be slightly aware she might just be a nutter. Don't go alone into her house - take a friend. She might accuse of anything if you are alone with her.

I have not heard the sound myself and have said to her that next time its really bad I'll quite happily come round and listen to it to see if I can hear where it's coming from. The sound has been described as like a fan or hum type noise. She has described it as being like the base sounds you feel more than hear in a nightclub. She says it is worse in the two main bedrooms which share walls with my house, which makes her think its coming from me. It's apparently worse upstairs than downstairs.

These are fairly recent new build houses which have sound proofing between them to the new standards which came in at the beginning of 2004. I cannot normally hear anything from them and she says she can't hear my TV/music.

I do want to help her identify what it is because it could be something coming from my house that I don't know of or if it is something in her house it could happen to mine in the future. We've always got on well with them and I don't want that to go sour because of this.

I have had my heating system checked this week, it was due an annual service anyway, and the engineer didn't find anything and she says she has had hers checked too. I have had a listen in my loft previously and cannot hear anything up there or see anything that is likely to cause any noise.

Lopez ... I have suggested poltergeists a couple of times :D

Azagoth ... with the junk in mine they'd have to be in hers ;)

I've been there ~5 years, she's been there ~3 years. Problem has only seemed to come on since the beginning of April.

anyone live with you?
if so when she next hears it go around, then phone up and get them to flick the master power switch in you house. That will rule your house out 100% if you can still hear it. Then do the same with her master switch.

I Used to have this problem, it sounded like a car engine was permanently running at night. Turned out it was the air vent running at the local pub several hundred meters away & amplifed by deflections of the surroundings on to my bed side of the room (i'm surrounded by external wall). Once i moved the bed around i could not hear it any more.
