Neighbour problems

If i were "honest enough" then i will be living here until he's old and decrepit and moves, or dies. Because i sure as hell won't be able to sell the house without losing a HUGE amount of money.

I have no qualms with this. Most people do it, it's a known risk when buying a semi-detached or terrace house and i lost out.

Never ever ever ever buy semi again. My first place i had a thread on here too and nearly lost my sanity, I was a month away from double homicide and dogicide? But when i thought i would never get out i got somewhere that is on the end row.

The council actually make it worse because they will fixate you on times, dates, noises, proof while making it obvious to the person a case is open. Someone with the brain power of an iguana will know to just lay low until the case is closed and rinse and repeat.

I think it depends on the age of the house. I live in a 1920's semi, and i swear next door could use a jack hammer on the wall and i wouldnt hear.

This was one of our concerns when looking a few years back and was one of the many reasons on what put us off new builds. Fortunately on most of the viewings there was someone living next door so we could get a good impression of noise traffic. We weren't impressed.

We ended up in a terraced cottage approx 100 years old. Internal walls are granite and about ~18inch thick. Can't hear a thing!

Stick it up on an online estate agent, minus the board and hope for the best. Hopefully another dead beat will purchase and fit right in. Don't mess about with one of the main agents, ridiculous fees.

Yep same, Victorian terrace at the moment and next door could be torturing a gimp for all I know.

They don't build em like they used to.

Also you have to remember new builds are so readily available and that certain propotions of the houses must be dedicated social housing you do get a lot of scummers moving on to the estates. You really don't know what sort of area a new build will be in but they charge top whack - usually 5 years down the line it's a scummy area.

I'd say 3/4 of the new build estates (past 10 years) round here are scummy now, the rest are just "ok".

I dunno. I've lived in 3 different victorian terraces across two cities, and they all let a fair bit of noise through. Fortunately, our neighbours weren't total ****ing scumbags.

Current place is a victorian/edwardian semi. I can hear next door's TV a bit, and when the phone rings, but never voices. Though it is an old dear on her own (can't hear voices when she has guests either though)

I hate this country's obsession with terraced / semi-detached property as not only can noise be such an issue but just the overall lack of living space in general.

I don't want to hear next door but equally I would like to be able to enjoy a loud movie every now and then. Sadly with the ever increasing price of land / houses, I doubt I will ever be able to afford a detached property and developers will continue to squeeze as many homes as possible on to a tiny estate.

We had similar neigbour issues when I was a kid, we ended up moving, having lived next-door to them for 14 years.

3 months later they moved out.

Yeah, my dad has an Edwardian semi and in the kitchen you can definitely hear voices from next door.

This country's obsession with terraced/semis is arguably driven by necessity though, given our relatively high (and ever-increasing) population density. Denser housing makes sense in a market where there is deemed to be a 'housing shortage' i.e. there is demand for housing and terraces therefore are more viable than spaced out detached properties.

Also regarding living space, the trend with new build terrace/semis seems to be towards townhouse style i.e. over 3 floors which means the living space is probably fairly reasonable relative to the land footprint.

could you find out of this has been reported before you purchased the house, the previous owners might have had issues? if so you could take them to task about it?

also for me i would have to move too, i have saved hard for the last few years so i am now in a position to purchase a detached house
it really sounds like you have a idiot next door:(

Isn't a requirement to diisclose if you have nuisance neighbours? I know it will affect selling your house and potentially even it's value, but if I bought a house and the neighbours were prats i'd be contacting my solicitor.

nope only if there is an on-going dispute as far as I'm aware, this one was resolved amicably before sale ie we agreed to disagree and the seller moved it would never stand up in court and has even been tested and failed for noisy neighbours.

We've been relatively lucky over the ten years we've lived in our terrace old couple one side who are quiet as mice and only two dodgy sets of tenants the other side. One set was liveable as it was only one of them who was an idiot he would get upset when Liverpool lost and play YNWA really loudly for hours locked in his room he then get a girlfriend we hoped would help with his depression but unfortunately she made very very loud animal noises late at night that could be heard several rooms away in our house. They were then replaced by a dope smoking looser who one day had his mates round stood on his coffee table an announced everyone on the street f-ing hated him and he didn't care. He was a nightmare an we were very close to going to the council the landlord was no help so it was nice that the druggy trashed the place as since then the landlord has only rented to nice couples!

Great to hear you are getting sorted, out of interest how did you do on selling the property? Did you manage to make any profit?

Glad to hear you're getting something sorted. It's been almost a year since the thread opened, is the **** still playing loud music?

Good for you :) put a brick through his window as you drive off

I am leaving that house knowing i one the moral battle. I've not done anything to them and will leave it that way. :)

Being North Herts, it sold with ease. Went on the market on a Thursday and was off the market on the Monday.
We bought the place 2 years ago for £245K and sold for £300K, we spend no more than about 5K on it... The house prices have gone silly around here.

Yep, now and then, not as bad as before but they got a dog.
He was shooting pigeons again the other day. Shot one off MY roof onto my conservatory, had a dead pigeon in the gutter...

Moving to a DETACHED house.... :D
