I personally hate what hip-hop/rap has become, my preferences are towards artists such as The Roots, Jurassic 5, Mos Def, Roots Manuva, Common... the type of artists who keep to the old school hip-hop "flavour" without coming across as idiotic, ignorant boasters.

I would suggest you try Kidz in the Hall, and The Cool Kids (in particular, their Bake Sale EP, which is brilliant).

I've never really gotten full-on nerd subculture. Just because I program doesn't mean I want to wear C++ joke t-shirts or listen to people rap about WoW.
