Nero Alternatives

I have been using nero vision in the past to take .avi files and burn them to a format on dvd's so I can then watch the home movies through any DVD player.

I wish to be able to do the same at my folks place over the next couple of months but don't have a second licence. Anyone know of alternative (preferably cheap or free) software that will perform the same task. Recode avi and other movies files and burn direct to DVD in a format which allows their viewing as DVD files?

Windows Live Movie maker does all of it. For free. http://download.live.com/moviemaker

Just trying windows DVD maker now, I have no idea this was built into Windows7

Seem to have been wasting my time with nero, the encoding seems faster in the windows product also. Time will tell.

I use DeVeDe and imgburn.
