Net Worth

You make up a number and multiply it by a number you've plucked from your ass. You then add 5 zeros to it - when no one is looking, obviously - and then start typing in threads just like this one. It's easy!

For seasoned pros it's different. You want to suggest that you're fabulously wealthy but without needing any of that awkward stuff like credibility or likeliness of not being a jobless bum.

"I banked 5 mill yesterday, it was a slow day (here, I'm showing meekness and am open, vulnerable).

When the markets open tomorrow I will destroy them with the strength of a PUMA! (here, I am being manly, also rich, strong animal overtones which is always worth while)"

Watch and learn.

Oh, I see now! In which case mine is £87.6 Mil. For taking the time to explain, magnolia can have half.

I take it net worth is the value of all your assets minus your debt?

If so iim in the red.

Back of a fag packet maths, yep.

I seriously wonder the value of calculating one's net worth though. If Forbes aren't doing it for you as part of their annual rich list, it's probably not of interest!! :p

About £700,000

Because I have a job that allows me to earn about that if I stay there my entire life. I know... talk about assets.

I started off well in my early 20's but with the GFC over the last few years and some stupid mistakes / investments I am not worth much at all. This combined with the fact that someone has put a PI claim against me that I do not have insurance for is more or less going clean me out. I hope these no win no fee solicitors rot in hell.

But give it 5 years and I will be back on top again. We still have our flat so thats something.

It's usually only a problem discussing things like this when people on the other end of the conversation can't accept someone has done better than them.

Lots of people earn more money than me and are worth more than me, and I say well done to you all.

This requires expansion if it's not too painful.

i am loaded and will never want for anything, ever again.

net worth = no worries.

and thats why i work in retail, just for the fun of it.

True story - my g/f's dad is loaded, properly loaded. He's 61 and has no need to work ever again.

He spends 4 days each week getting up at 4am, riding his ancient goldwing to his local waste disposal centre where he then proceeds to drive the bin lorry and empty bins all morning.

Why? Boredom. He simply cannot fill his days with enough interest so he's taken on a 25 hour job.

I personally cannot imagine having that much money and not being able to fill my time, but it must be the case for him and probably a lot of others.

YES. Playing the game.

YES. Playing the game.

I'm in two minds about this too, I can't seem to guide my moral compass to a conclusion.

He has as much right as anyone else to work regardless of his situation, but that 25 hour job could go to someone else who needs a job, particularly in Salcombe where employment isn't readily forthcoming.

Not much to it really, with the crisis my business suffered which was to be expected. Cash savings took a massive hit on the stock market. I started to build a property which worked to to be a lot more then expected so all this put together has ended up costing us most of what we have.

The PI claim I cant talk about because its still active but its just some opportunistic women trying to get money out of us for something that was really not our fault.

But to be honest we are fine, we have very low living costs, my wife still has a good job, she will be a GP in under a year and our parents can help us if we ever really needed it. A friend and I are starting a new business for a product that we have been developing for a couple of years so in a few years time if things go well we should be back on top again.

I really don't find any of it painful because we have a strong family safety net and good qualifications behind us. There are a lot of other people who have had a MUCH MUCH harder time since 2007. It also helps that we dont have kids yet.

We still have a good life, good friends, decent cars and and a strong relationship.

The only part of the last year that has broken my heart is that my dog died and my wife had cancer but both are behind us now that we have a new puppy and my wife is on the road to recovery.

We are both still young so have our whole life ahead of us.

Your positive attitude and optimism is inspiring Dr House.

I hope that the PI claim dissolves and you two can get on with building your lives together.

EDIT: Grammar error

Thanks.

Its only the PI claim that is causing us some stress. I should find out today but I may have a top London barrister willing to take it on (friend of a friend) so hopefully she will be able to make it all go away. :)
