but
had a client call me up last week, they had bought a netbook with linux on it.
they had called me because the couldn't get their money back. when they found they couldn't have "MS office" on it they where not interested. que a few "pro bono" hours of showing how it works and they seem ok with it. but this was one of my older clients, who have the time to fiddle etc and the brains to do it (ex surgeon) where-as jo public can't even be trusted not to blow up their VCR (when they had one) or sky+.

I don't think it's a bad thing that the public don't use linux more, I really don't. I've no issue with it being a niche market and being part of that.

XP has been the mainstream OS for almost a decade, vista received a similar reception.

I recently bought a HP MiniNote 2133 netbook. It came with SUSE which wouldn't boot out of the box with a GRUB error. So I thought I'd install Ubuntu on it. After trying to start the install failed, I Googled about and found out I needed to downgrade my BIOS to a previous version to get it working. This is not user friendly and while I could do this they are software updates for a reason. So much for Canonical's 'we are easy to use'

W7 and XP, on the other hand, went on without a problem.

If you bought a computer and it didn't work off the bat I'd have taken it back IMMEDIATELY and told them to sort it.

The very fact it's NOT working OFTB is highly suspicious.

If you Google it, it is a common problem with the mininote and is due to poor QA rather than an actually fault.

My point is no one should have to downgrade firmware to install an OS.

its still faulty and should have gone back.

Yes, I find Windows goes on with a problem on my hardware too... it's always accompanied by much grumbling on my part.

LOL, only just noticed that typo. It was annoying in XP, i had to spend an hour so downloading drivers on another machine, transferring them to a USB drive then installing them. W7 however
