Hi there I'm getting a Samsung NC10 and I have a few questions.

What is the best security for a netbook?

Will Office 2007 run well on a netbook?

What must-have applications should I download once I get it?

Thnx in advance. :)

For security on my laptop I run NOD32.com and MalwareBytes. I was a bit disappointed that NOD32 missed some malware recently, that's why I have MalwareBytes too.

Office 2007 will run fine. It runs fine on my Acer One.

I recommend Spotify for free music. Also, make sure you have a backup solution in place, i.e. external USB hard drive.

Enjoy your new netbook!

Thnx for the advice radderfire. I'll have a look at NOD and MalwareBytes.

I will be using it most for word processing so I wasn't sure if there was a netbook version of Office, it's good to know it will still run well.

I'll download Spotify on it and I already got a portable HD so it'll be useful.

I checked out the Application sticky and there are some good ones.

No mroe advice, so no more Netbook owners on Overclockers?

it should most software fine,
i put MS security essentials on it, with no issues
you may want to consider b4 you buy one that it wont take a 64bit OS, and you can pick up 11.6 notebooks, that will outperform it
eg the acers, celeron yes but outperform an atom

OpenOffice 3.2 will save you £70 / £90 so you can buy a better netbook, free avg will save you another £30..

just change the default for openoffice saved files to be DOC /XLS rather than ODF..

The netbooks I have installed for people run better if you remove all the crap they pre-install

I find MS security essentials does the job - it's the least obtrusive AV I've found. I'm pretty careful anyway so not worried about having the 'best' AV in terms of picking up everything, I just want something that'll pick up most stuff and dsits in the background without nagging me to pay for something.

As far as software is concerned, take your pick from here:
http://ninite.com/
It'll build a single, unattended installer for everything you pick. Ideal when you're setting up a new machine.

I've got both a 9" netbook (Acer Aspire One) and an 11.6" netbook (HP Mini 311), and it has to be said that the HP is a noticeably bigger, heavier machine (even though technically still a netbook). Can't quite throw it in the bag without noticing it's there in the way you can with the Acer. Either way, Atom is fine for most basic uses.

If you don't need the full OpenOffice suite, you could also try Abiword Portable. Intended to run off a USB memory stick but light for netbooks. Better still it is a standalone app so does not install files everywhere else...
