I've got money burning a hole in my pocket because I definitely want a 10" internet/video playing device.
My first choice was going to be a Packard Bell Butterfly Touch which has an advantage of being a PC but with a flick of the screen be turned into a tablet but it isn't 10".
I then thought the Advent Vega (with Modaco rom) would be ideal but would the storage space be enough?
In another thread somebody mentioned if you are watching videos on a tablet you have got to hold it for the duration of the film unless you prop it up with pillows but with a Netbook it props itself up.
And yes, video is important because I watch at least one hour a day on my Samsung Galaxy S.
The device would be used for mainly weekends away where you're not really going to be doing PC related stuff and my wife would sit with it while she watches TV.

So your thoughts:
Do you think Tablets are a fad and a decent Netbook would be superior?
Try and talk me into one or the other but beware because price is King.

The ASUS Slider and Transformer tablets would be a much better bet.
(Current Atom powered tablets generate too much heat for something you hold... they've got cooling fans ffs :p)

What's your budget? Screen quality is where the bulk of the RRP goes (for both tablets and netbooks) if it's cheap, it's got a cheap screen.

My vote. A Netbook with Windows 7. A mouse is useful because the touchpad buttons can be a bit awkward at the lower edge of the small device. A fixed hardware keyboard is more useful than a touchscreen and software keyboard.

Mine is a second hand HP Compaq CQ10-500 1024 x 600 OLED screen 160Gb HDD 1Gb ram

The Vegas case has a built in stand and takes an sd card for storage and is compatible with nas boxes for streaming. It is also compatible with usb mice and keyboards if you've got to do loads of writing. Its fast, silent (no fans), the screen is good enough, although viewing angles are bad (this had never bothered me as the view is fine if you look at it 'normally') I have a good laptop and have only used it for killing floor since I got the Vega.

I would recommend one all day long, better tablets are due for release shortly, but I won't be upgrading as they won't really offer much more by way of features.

I have a both, and general use like music and web there roughly the same, with the tablet sometimes having better battery life, but when you want to watch a movie, or do some word work, or type a lot out, the netbook wins

I haven't seen a picture of it standing up (how it stands up).

You would have thought that somebody would have invented a keyboard/stand with USB lead that all tablets could fit into like the ASUS Transformer one above.

Well i must agree and also say that the Asus Transformers has took my liking, its thin, runs tegra 2 and has up to 16 hours battery life, and can be used as a tablet/netbook, :D looks really smart imo as well :)

Yeah I agree - that has totally caught my eye. More so than either the Xoom or the Toshiba Tablet. Great idea!

I think I've seen one that the Vega fits, I'm sure I've seen a picture somewhere...

For the price the Vega is brilliant, and I can't see how any other device could be worth more money, as all you can do on any of them is mess about on the internet, play a few games that aren't as good as PC/Console games and watch films/listen to music. You can even tether to android phones via Wifi and plug in a USB GPS receiver for HUGE gps navigation.

That's pretty much the limit of tablets, they can't entirely replace a PC, but if you already have a PC and are thinking about getting a laptop for 'mobile' around the house browsing etc, then a tablet does everything you need - and a Vega does it at a good price.

I'm now beginning to come round to the Vega and godinman has posted what I've been thinking.

The Advent Vega should eventually have Android 3.0 running on it because of it's Tegra chipset.
If not it can always have the Modaco upgrade but I reckon it will be useable out of the box like my Samsung Galaxy S was even though I have put Darky's 9.2 rom on.

Compare prices of the ASUS Transformer to the Vega:
Transformer + keyboard stand = £480
Advent Vega £250 + some generic stand.
I can't really see much spec difference between the 2 tablets.

The Vega is looking favourite.

With the Asus, i suspect you are paying for the brand name, the option of a netbook aswell with that laptop stand which when plugged in, you wouldnt tell the difference between that and a normal netbook, only when opened up probably..and of course the claimed 16 hours of battery life.

I am also impressed by the Vega, and for a cheap price, its tegra and the stand which i havent seen yet but sounds promising. I feel the Vega will most probably get honeycomb sooner or later as it would work find, especially as 3.0 is made for 10.1" tablets :D
