Netflix - am I missing something here?

I have a Netflix account (UK) which my partner in Austria also uses.

Recently we have noticed that our available titles are completely different. We both have a profile and those profiles have the same age/rating settings.

I understand that there are different licencing issues for different countries, but the difference is much greater than I expected.

Random examples:
She has hosts of Marvel and DC titles, I have almost none
She has Rambo, I do not
She has The Valhalla Murders, I do not
She has Ghostbusters (the original), I do not

Am I being completely dense or is this just how it is?

Yup, Netflix has different libraries for different countries.

You can notice shows and movies being in or out of availability when you travel. I started Ash vs Evil Dead on holiday in Norway and on the plane back, but it was unavailable as soon as we landed back in the UK (couple of years ago: It's on UK Netflix now)

It's why some people use VPNs to access it from different territories.

Yeah it is kind of weird - if you are in Canada for instance the available movies is completely different to the UK on the same account. (Or was not sure what the current differences are - I don't tend to bother using VPNs to get different content, etc.).

When I used a VPN with Netflix a lot, Brazil of all countries got the new releases first. They were often showing titles that had just left cinema in USA and hadn't hit cinema here. This was a good 4 years ago though.

Nothing new, congrats

Does really suck, I also vpn to access the different content

It’s not a Netflix thing, it’s in everything. Lots of reasons.

Cars are not released the same all over.

Even iPhones are different, China have dual sim versions.

For streaming services, Funimation in the US have One Piece, UK do not.

Netflix Japan have One Piece but Japanese audio only.

UK Netflix have Friends, US do not.

It's really of no surprise. There will be different distributors for content around the world - who is distributor for a programme in the UK won't be the same distributor for said programme in Canada for example.
Netflix will approach a distributor for a programme and make a deal - maybe the distributor in the UK doesn't like the deal or is considering selling the rights to a different service.

What was weird was that for a long time Lilyhammer wasn't on UK Netflix, even though they made it, or had a hand in making it. Maybe they sold the rights to a TV station here or something

Same goes for Longmire; Netflix bought the rights and made the final season of it after it was cancelled by A&E, but TCM had the broadcast rights to it in the UK so it's never been available on Netflix itself here.

I'm not a complete luddite guys, I'm aware there will be differences due to licencing and distribution issues etc, I guess it's just the scale of it that surprised me - we sat at the same time last night and she listed about 30 titles, I think I had about 4 of them!

As said, it all comes down to different rights in different countries.

You'll also find that a lot of Netflix Originals were made by someone else and then Netflix will do a deal to make it an Original in certain countries. ITV do it a lot where on Netflix in the UK it'll be branded as ITV but the same show in the US will be branded as a Netflix Original.

Wow! That’s amazing, I didn’t know that the Netflix catalog changed depending on each country. I thought it was standard for everyone, like blockbusters that everything had the same thing no matter which one you were.

Nope.

Blockbusters had different stuff depending on which country you were in as well;)

All streaming services and broadcasters have their content varying by country (at least at the moment), as the rights are sold to different groups in each country so say Amazon might have the rights to something in one country, Netflix in another, and in a third country they might be locked up in a deal from years previously with say Sky (IIRC Sky were locking up some streaming rights before they had a streaming platform).

Trouble with vpns, well Nord at least is that chromecast and fire TV versions of Netflix spot you're on vpn and still block Netflix.
I heart UnblockUS :*(
