hi

I was thinking about all the film rental services the other day and how much I pay for the services I subscribe too.

I currently have Lovefilm and netflix (with unblock US).

I feel I pay a lot but I do like the latest releases and a hard copy on bluray from Lovefilm.

Although Netflix streaming quality is fairly good and I cant always tell the difference from a playing a bd and streaming apart from sound quality.

I would maybe like to cancel Lovefilm eventually but then I would not get the new releases and have to wait for them to become available on Netflix if they ever do.

Which got me thinking , do you ever think that Netflix would bring out premium packages with the latest releases?

It would be nice to have just one rental service as at present there are so many and I dont really know if I would be better off with another service at a later date.

No, as sky holds exclusivity rights for is it 12months.
So until that changes they can't.
And sky has so much money it'll be a very long time before the market shifts enough away from live tv.

It's annoying how split the market is. You need so many subscriptions to get everything. This is one place a monopoly is good. I really wouldn't mind paying £25 for netflix or similar if they had almost everything.

But somehow blinkbox has some how carved its way into the mainstream and they have exclusivity for game of thrones and a few others.

And yes amazon should buy them. And netflix should produce more shows themselfs.

Even better would be for EU to come in and say iif you sell rights, then all rights have to be available to all parties at same cost.

Just because the resolution is 1080p, doesn't mean the bitrate is anywhere near BD though. It's good, don't get me wrong but watch any movie on Netflix with a lot of dark scenes (Alien) and you see the crushed blacks.

What's the experience without a HD soundtrack? You're missing most of what makes the film special IMO.

Streaming is good for catching up on tv shows or the odd film, but I wouldn't replace physical media for pure picture quality. Besides, with apps like makemkv, you can achieve 1-click conversion for BDs, so if you have enough local storage you could have the best of both worlds.
 
Netflix is ok but it's no Bluray with DTS quality, the DTS part being the important part, I find that sound much better than DD.

Although there is something to be said about movies on the tip of your fingers.
 
The highest quality setting on Netflix (its been updated again recently I think) is fairly decent and if your watching from a distance on a middle sized TV then probably harder to distinguish from BD. The color range is relatively squashed even tho some of the edge detail is fairly well preserved. I find it acceptable especially for rewatching older shows, etc. (where they are available in HD).
 
does netflix do 5.1 audio? or any of the streaming services in the uk?

worst video quality must be skygo :D
it's like watching a vhs a lot of the times brings me right back the the 90s lmfao

Oh yeah not at all, I would not want to replace physical bd with streaming.

I was thinking of maybe cancelling LF as I buy bd's that I think are going to be good anyway and all the other rentals are just films that I add to fill up my rental list and I cant always find the time to watch them or be bothered to and a lot of the time they end up on netflix not to far down the line.
