Netflix to cut streaming quality in Europe for 30 days

Has anyone got any idea when this ridiculous cap is going to be lifted?

Maybe we could have it lifted at night and Facebook (which uses far more bandwidth) turned off instead.
If they can get away with it, possibly never. As long as people as prepared to keep paying their original subscription fee for a reduction in quality, they'll keep doing it. At the end of the day, they are in this to make money.

I'll be cancelling my netflix plan soon if they don't give back the max bit rate, fair enough if it is for a month or 2 but any longer than that, no thanks. I didn't pay for the ability to use it on more than 1 device nor for any of the other extras, I only paid to get the best quality they offered and well that is no longer being offered and it is noticeable on good tvs.

Either give a discount on each month until it returns to original bit rate or drop packages to match what is likely to be the new standard going forward.

Won't be a big loss for myself tbh as I can get the content elsewhere.....

The pixelation on panning shots @2160p does my head in especially if there is a straight edge in the scene it's almost as if your eyes flick to the area that seems different on screen.

You're sooo cool ...

We haven't had any problems with Amazon Prime video but Netflix has been terrible for the past week or so for us. It starts at 244 then 480 and hits a maximum of 720 if we are lucky. There are frequent drops to 244 and 480 though and they last for several minutes at a time. The quality is just awful, especially at 244 and 480 where the picture goes blocky. Nothing else is affected, only Netflix.

The 4k stuff I saw on Netflix still looked OK, but I attempted to watch the Platform the other day which is only 1080p, and that was a horrendous low quality mess.

They really should not cap the quality of the 1080p streams much because they are already lower bitrate.

You're sooo cool ...

I know, I really am, thanks

Why is he 'so cool'?

Why would you expect to keep paying full price for a shoddy service?
Indeed.

Like I said, understandable and fair enough for the first month or 2 but after that, em, no thanks, I'm not going to pay the same price for getting lesser quality than what I was before this....

But have you told them you're not happy with being treated this way?

When the epidemic is over and viewing numbers return to a more normal level and it isn't costing them as much in bandwidth. People maintain a subscription without necessarily using it 24/7 in normal times. Now they are and they're not making as much profit.

Yup I went on the chat after this was announced to say are we going to get any form of a discount if this continues for longer than 30 days and the response was, we will review it after then and decide what to do.

But good point, will be contacting them tomorrow to say I'll be cancelling if they aren't going to revert back or at least offer some of a discount, like I said above, it won't be a loss for myself if I do cancel it.

This is an interesting point - I think if people really think it's unacceptable to lower quality, they need to feedback to the provider. But in this case it's not like Netflix can change a setting on your account to enable full bandwidth.

So I guess they're just going to have to take the hit in lost custom.

It’s like going into a pub, ordering a pint and getting three quarters of a pint, and then the barman saying that it’s because they’re very busy and lots of people want the lager, but it’s still £4. Not acceptable.

Will give it another month or so and if not returned to normal streaming it will be time to change my subs, why pay premium sub if they not even saying whats happening.

The reason for reducing the bandwidth is because of an increase in data usage.

A better analogy is going to the pub and receiving four ¾ pints for £12 instead of three full pints for £12.

I cancelled at the time and put the reason for cancelling as due to the quality being lowered but not the subscription. They're basically taking the p*** out of peoples good nature during this pandemic. Not one single UK ISP has had capacity issues.
