Netgear D7000 / Plusnet Internet dropping out.

Picked up a D7000 router from the marketplace a week back and having some odd issues...
Firmware updated (V1.0.1.78_1.0.1) and router was reset upon delivery.

Every so often (overnight sometimes and sometimes during the day) the internet connectivity will drop out. Browsers and such will give BAD DNS errors. According to the router the "Internet Connectivity" is "Good".

The router logs don't show the internet as being disconnected, only when I click the "Apply" button on the Internet page of the router will the logs show a disconnection..

Any ideas please? I'm thinking it's a router config issue perhaps but the internet is set to "Always On".

Just to confirm this didn't happen beforehand with the old PlusNet standard router did it?

If not it might be worth while seeing if you get a new IP everytime this occurs as it could be an issue with the DHCP lease from PlusNET. Another shout would be to check the MTU settings as once I had a similar issue and the MTU was set to 1500 so I lowered it to 1492 which was much more stable for general browsing and internet usage (Even though both yielded a connection)
Also, if you can, see what the DNS settings are on the router, I've never really used NetGear much (DrayTek and SonicWALLs at home) but if it's like previous TP-Links I have had then you can hard-set the WAN and LAN DNS to something like 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1

Thanks for the reply. Correct, everything was ok with the PlusNet router, the router was just rubbish for wifi.

My current MTU is 1488 - could that be the issue?
New IP address this morning after a reconnect as we woke up to no internet. (The router still shows connected but no devices would work) What's odd is that when this happens only my hardwired devices are able to connect to the router page...
DNS is fetched from the PlusNet servers automatically.

That is very very weird, I'd try the MTU as 1492 but if when the bug happens only hard wired devices can connect I'd say it sounds like a fault
 
I had the same with a D7000 turned out to be a lemon. Netgear replaced it but the next one did exactly the same so I just put it in the bin as I couldn't take it back to where I brought it. I tried for months to get it to work.

Same :( on mine it manifested itself as any WiFi devices randomly dropping internet connection, the signal stayed at full strength, just it lost its IP address and defaulted to the auto config ip range, happened on multiple devices, different brands, I tried everything. It got binned in the end. Replacing with the isp router and another new third party router fixed it.
 
Exactly the same issue on my D7000. Thank god it's not just me.

Any WiFi connected devices just seemingly lose connection to the D7000 in the evening/night. All wired connections are fine.

I went through QoS carefully incase anything there was affecting it but seemingly not.
 
I had this with my D7000, it happened between 600-700 hours of uptime and wireless devices lost their IPs. I moved DHCP over to a raspberry pi I have pihole running on and it solved the issue.
 
I also convinced it DHCP related. My smart TV (wired) went through a phase of losing net connection and when I checked it had an APIPA address instead of the IP address the D7000 DHCP server assigned it.

Yes I think it's a DHCP issue related to a bug in the firmware as it started happening after an update (can't remember which one now but I tracked it back to the version at the time). Wireless devices with a static ip kept the connection so I assumed the DHCP process had issues renewing leases.

600 hours uptime was repeatable if I rebooted the router before this it never had an issue it never made it to 700 hours without the issue occurring.
 
Mines did it in as little as 24 - 48 hours uptime.

I can't remember the exact lease period the D7000 assigns wireless devices but I don't think it's very long before the renewal process kicks in.
 
Sounds like a separate issue but mtu should definitely be 1492 on plusnet. I had issues with it being set at 1500 when I switched from sky to plusnet using pfsense
 
@rhysduck I have an update on this if you still have the unit. Depending on how brave you are. I dismantled my D7000V2 removed the heat shield and cpu cooler (they are soldered on). What you need to do is remove the solder on the legs and the shield will drop off, that will then show the pegs for the cpu cooler. I then removed the heat pad off of the cpu and put some arctic silver on the cpu and replaced the cpu cooler and held it tight and put solder back on the pegs to keep it tight. Then replaced the heat shield. It has now been up 10 days without a drop out.
