Netgear DG834G connection speed issue - upgrade needed?

I'm currently using a Netgear DG834G v2 which I have had for several years. So far it has been rock solid, and connects flawlessly at 8Mb. I recently got an email from BT saying my exchange had been upgraded, and having checked I should now be able to get 15Mb. However, no matter what I do my router won't connect at anything above 8Mb :(
Is there anything i can do to the router to get it to connect at a higher speed, or is it simply too old, and it's time to get something newer?

Thanks in advance.

Post your router's line stats so we can check your noise levels etc. Just because BT's systems say you might be able to get 15mb, this might not always be accurate. Also could be worth upgrading to DGTeam firmware

Make sure router is plugged in to the master socket, if it is, remove the faceplate, plug in to test socket and check what speed its syncing at then.

Without the line stats its hard to say?

Post them up if you can, also, who is your ISP?

I only have one broadband socket, as I have the original engineer installed version with a master plate.

Line stats are:

Line Att 17db down 4 db up
Noise Margin 23db down 24db up

Are you sure your actually on an ADSL2+ package? sounds to me like your exchange has been upgraded, but your still on an ADSL max profile, also I dont think the DG834G is an ADSL2+ compatible router, might want to check on google but it doesnt mention it is on the netgear page, this might be your issue

You probably haven't been upgraded to ADSL2+ automatically - so you won't see speeds above 8Mbit til your actually upgraded.

Yep, a new router I would get, also, check with BT to make sure you really are on a 21CN ADSL2+ package

Pretty sure the V2 isn't ADSL2/+ enabled either!

Nope its not

Your better off spending £10 and getting a sky branded netgear DG834GT from the bay, then debranding it from the sky firmware back to netgears firmware, then upgrading to the DGTeam firmware

Thanks - I'll wait till I have it confirmed that I can definitely get ADSL2+ at my house before I change the router though, just in case...
Will probably get one of these as I have been happy with Netgear.

Thats what i did thanks to DJMK4, my connection is stable unlike the speedtouch i had from Be. My line is no better though which limits me to a possible max of 7.5mb :(

For a tenner its worth a punt and as your line is better than mine you should see some massive gains ;)

Hehe, glad I could help :)

With the OP's stats (which are better than mine) you could potentially get around 16-17mb, but dont quote me on that. I should be getting around 19mb with my stats but only get around 15mb

According to the tests I have done, I'm getting pretty much the maximum I can at the moment, so will stick with what I have until I can find out when the local cabling will be upgraded.
Fortunately BT have a stand in the local shopping centre, and the guys there are always very helpful - could barely understand the guy in India I spoke to on the phone.

Hmmm, to be honest I wouldnt trust the guy on a stand in a shopping center, he is most likely a sales guy and wont know much about the ins and outs about the technical side of the line. Just what ever someone has told him to say to bring in the most sales as possible.

They are actually pretty good, and will find out answers to stuff they don't know. They appear to have access to resources/numbers that aren't published to us mere mortals. I'm sure they should be able to find out when the cabling is scheduled to be upgraded. They just use a stand as shop rentals are ridiculously expensive, but they want to have a presence.

Cool, let us know how you get on :) Main thing to remember is, although your exchange may be 21CN upgraded, the package you are on might still be on an ADSL Max profile so dont assume you should be on one :) If your exchange has upgraded, find out when your connections profile or package will be upgraded to take advantage of it.

Oh well - turns out BT need to replace the cabling to the house to get improved speeds :(

Will they do this for free?

And as your router is not adsl+2 am i right in assuming the best it can do is 8mb?

Im no adsl expert but maybe without a line upgrade you should get better speeds using the correct router even if your line is an old one?

Just some ideas.

edit: as above your profile will need to be changed
