Ok peeps, trying to help my dad out, he as recently brought a (Netgear DG834GT) router and what we want to do is run, my dads laptop, and my moms new laptop and then brothers computer off the router, now my dads picked the network up no problems, as he uses it at work etc, but were trying to set my moms laptop up but for some reason its not picking the router up, ive selected wireless setup but nothing, so any1 got any ideas, i thought laptops didnt need to be connected via a ethernet cable as they have a build in wireless card, so i need ** help peeps cheers.

That's the case if you mum's laptop has a built in wireless card, not all have though, so you need to check really.

What make/model is it?

Make sure the wireless is enabled on the laptop - there is sometimes a button to turn it on/off.

If the laptop is DELL:
it is Fn+F2 keys.

One more thing that might help is adding the MAC number of the lappy to the router access list. You can also try to let the network's name to be disclosed until you get the laptop seeing it. Then you can disable this from the router menu.

Also if you use WPA PSK security you would need to insert the key into the lappy wireless menu.

its a EI Systems 3087 i think

After abit of messing about we got a connection and managed to do a few updates for windows and norton, when we restarted we again lost connection, so i tried the ethernet connection worked fine, then we tried netgear wireless usb it again worked fine, so im thinking the onboard wireless reciever is faulty but not sure, some1 mentioned a switch ive looked everywere but cant find a switch, so anymore help you guys can give me i will be gratefull. cheers

Ps one last thing im abit of a noob when it comes to computers, and wireless is also new to me, so anytips make them easy hehe cheers all

First you might want to deletet the link to the competitor's site, this is against the forum rules.

It clearly says that it supports WiFi so it must be there, whether it works or not is a different story.

You have managed to get it connected once. Next time you switch the laptop on you mighht want to look in the task bar for the wireless icon, a single desktop PC icon. If it does not work, use the right mouse button and try the Repair option. It usually works pretty well, although it could be anoying doing it everytime.

If you click on the wifi icon in the task bar you will see several options. Choose Properties. bottom left corner and then go to wireless network. Tick Use Windows to confiigure my wifi network and try it.

It should work unless something is seriously at fault.

Good luck!

good luck getting that lappy to work mate.i had a go with a mates lappy trying to connect to a DG834 V2 about a year back :( failed miserably
i never got it to work, maybe the wireless is incompatible??
in the end i told him to get a netgear usb dongle and BANG connected first time, bit awkward to use on lap,but it is usually on desk or table for use.
