netgear dg834g

Finally got round to getting one off these ive got a version 2 firmware is set to V3.01.25 there is a newer version, but I don't think I need to upgrade the firmware just yet. Got it working via the cat 5 cable on my main pc. Plugged another cat5 into my old pc, and the internet isnt working although ive got the network connection icon saying iam connected. Tried wirelessly on my laptop, same thing happens but it dis-connects me after a few seconds, then sometimes re-connects.

Both my old pc and laptop did have static IP address, ive tried setting obtain IP address automatically and DNS on my laptop. But still have the same problem.

So in short, works ok on new rig but not on old rig and on laptop.

Could someone give me a hand on what I need to do please?

Does the LAN led light up on the router when connected? Try different cat5 cables? Do they get an IP when set to auto obtain?
Make sure there are no proxies set in Internet Explorer (connections tab in options menu)
Make sure 'auto detect settings' in above is not ticked as well
Check network link speed in the network card is set to auto / full duplex

I used to have the linksys wag54g, and ive just swapped it for this new one. Now I assigned static IP's to the old rig and laptop.

Yup LED's are all on

Tried different cat5 cable, I know this one works as I used it previously

Not sure about your 3rd and 6th

Cant see ant proxies

Yup got 'never dial a connection' selected'

have you entered your isp username and password into the dg834g?
try the connection setup wizard

yup, entered my username and PW, and I can connect ok via my new rig using a cat5cable. Thats fine its the laptop and old rig I can't get working probably

if 1 pc is working fine, connecting to the internet etc. it's most likely the other pc's not being configured properly.

have you switched off any firewalls on the old rig to see if that is why the old rig looks connected but you can't surf

and disabled any of the wireless security settings on the dg834g, then connect via the laptop to see if it is a wep/wpa-psk/mac filtering glitch

i have my dg834g setup to dish out certain ips to certain pcs by way of their mac code

try start>run>cmd>ipconfig /all
on each of the pcs to see if one of them is misbehaving
the old rig and the laptop should have 192.168.0.1 as their default gateways (i.e. connecting through the router)

Disabled WPA PSK, which was what I had from my linksys alos disabled encryption on my wireless usb adapter on my laptop, and it worked.

Tried re-enabling WPA PSK but with a simple password, and it doesnt connect now. Before it would sometimes connect briefly then disconect.

Edit, seems to be working now on my laptop I think it was the original key I was having problems with I used one from here http://www.kurtm.net/wpa-pskgen/ dont think Netgear supports it.

Not tried my old rig yet though.
