Netgear FA311 Set Up Problems

I am having some problems setting up a BT internet connection for my son. He is using XP service pack 2.

The network card FA311 was causing some problems and the set up CD could not make the connection from the router to the network card although the card was showing as working properly in Device Manager. The trouble shooter said there was re was a problem with allocating an IP address. I tried selecting “repair” which did not work.


I tried updating the network card driver with the XP update wizard. While searching for the updated drivers, obviously on the hard disk, the Avast update announced that the virus database had just been updated, so I had obviously had just made the connection and gone online, although XP still appeared to be searching for a driver. Everything worked great online for the rest of the night but tonight after booting up cannot find the connection again.

My son phoned BT and spoke to a gentleman in India who took him through some checks and told him he had the wrong IP adress, it started 169 and should start 192. He could not help any further and could not understand how he had been on line last night with the wrong IP address.

Can anyone help fix this? I have checked some of the settings on the LAN connection properties and the settings are "get IP address automatically" and "get DNS address automatically"

Can I uninstall and reinstall the card with the correct settings or is there another way to fix this?

Tried that tonight. All went well and the exclamation mark disappeared from the internet link icons as soon as I reset the TCP/IP stack but the warning returned to the icons after I rebooted and I could not connect. I tried a few times with the same results.

I then run the Microsoft Diagnostic Utility and got the utility and got the following results.

Thanks for that. He appears to have taken a step forward and the exclamation marks are removed from the internet icons.

He has left the "alternate dns server" blank in the TCP/IP is this correct?

What configuration does the router need?

Unfortunately he still cannot connect and is getting "page cannot be found" with IE.

Any other ideas?

XP Network Settings Screwed Up - Me Cracking Up

I have tried various things and still having problems connecting to the internet. I am now certain that the problem is with some of the XP network settings. I have already renewed the TCP/IP which has not helped.

BT "help" software/troubleshooter simply resets the "obtain IP address" to automatic and when the system reboots I get an error and note that Windows has reset the IP to 169....... Manually setting the IP and DNS addresses, as advised here, solves the error and tells me I am connected but I still get page unavailable for any web page and a can't connect error in OE. I also cannot access the router from IE with 192.168.1.1

I have been on the phone three nights running to three different people in Bangalore who have been no help. I must have said "pardon" and "sorry I cannot make you out" at least one thousand time in the past three evenings. I believe that if you call to complain about the service you are also put through to Bangalore.

I am now sure that the problem lies within the Windows network settings, IP, DHCP, DNS or whatever else would stop me connecting.

Is there a way to reset all of the network settings to the the default, other than reinstalling XP, or is there a list of Windows XP settings that can be checked to resolve this problem and get connected?

I travel over the Forth Road Bridge to work every day and the parapet is beginning to looking very tempting!

Can someone help please?

Thanks for that. I will try this weekend.

He has managed to get set up in the interim by using the USB cable and is now online. To switch to the ethernet connection do we now simply:

1. Renew the TCP/IP following your instructions.
2. Shutdown, remove the USB and fit the ethernet cable.
3. Reboot.

As all passwords etc. are already in the router is that it?
