Does anyone have any experience with the Netgear XAVB1004 Homeplug 200Mbps Powerline AV adapter kit with 4-port Ethernet switch?

This is to connect an ADSL Modem Router on the ground floor to a TV, Xbox & Laptop on the 2nd floor.

For various reasons, I don't want to run wires around the house and am not convinced that wireless will be adequate and/or cost effective although I would be interested in any sensible suggestions on having a router on the 2nd floor connecting fast, reliably and securely via wireless to the ADSL Modem Router on the ground floor.

No direct experience but its cons include

1) expensive
2) only works with other netgear 200mbs - netgear is incompatible with all the rest who work together

If you're not planning to stream HD the ones in my FS thread in sig would more than suffice ;)

the netgear is expensive for no advantage
there are alternative Homeplugs that do the same including
the diy option of 2 home plugAV's and a cheap switch or access point at the other end

I use a zyxel nbg418s homeplug router to feed a htpc cable, and wii (wifi)

this router runs in an access point mode in the current firmware, 4 ports and wifi

solwise also have products

I accept that they are expensive and would be more than happy to try a cheaper, reliable, fast alternative.

Incidentally, according to a review I have read, this device is completely compatible with the Devolo dLAN 200 AVeasy units although I too have heard that the Netgear HomePlug standard is a standard unique to Netgear ;)

I can't find any reference to the zyxel nbg418s homeplug router, even on the ZyXEL website

I have considered the idea of two HomePlugs and a cheap switch - you are absolutely right, it may well be the most viable and indeed, the only half-way sensible solution.

my bad, shuld be nbg-318s, theres also an pla-450 homeplug/wifi bridge

On compatibility Netgear have hopped around with this technology using different chipsets etc over several years, getting confirmation of the stndard used is a good idea

I have used them. Yes they are on the expensive side but they work well. I had a starter kit which had 1 with the 4 ports and 1 with single and i also bought another. They worked perfectly with no issues. Actually better than my Linksys ones.

I use a Netgear 1 port 100mbps home plug to a Netgear 4 port swith in my workshop which is located at the bottom of the garden. Not sure if it streams video fast enough but I don't notice any diiference in speed with the LAN devices. Fast Cable broadband helps though.
