Hey guys,

Got a bit of a problem connecting wirelessly. I'm currently on Talktalk broadband, and the default modem they supplied me was a Speedtouch 330, which is a USB MODEM. Now, I've just bought a wireless router and I thought that would be enough to connect wirelessly onto the internet, but apparently, you have to plug your existing ETHERNET enabled modem into one of the wireless ports in order to gain wireless access? Is this true?

I can't actually see a way in which I can connect wirelessly at the moment without going through this process, as the manual infers to. Does that mean I HAVE to have an ethernet enabled modem for my wireless to work?!

Another problem is that I'm trying to connect it through my macbook - any guidance would be much appreciated!

Dont you plug the network cable from your modem into the wireless router and then the wireless router out port to where the network cable of the modem use to go? in other words, it goes between the modem and the socket out on your wall?

Think thats right?

Take the netgerar router back as you need to get a adslmodem/router/wireless some thing like THIS

On your Macbook it will probably have a wireless adapter built in so you will just need to make sure it is enabled in the Network settings in System Preferences and then scan for wireless networks and enter the Wep or WPA password you have configured on the router.

My current modem is a USB one - it doesn't have an ethernet port at the back - this is where it becomes problematic.

Sorry looks like you've got the wrong type of router, since the modem you have doesn't have ethernet out, you need a new modem with ethernet or a new router which has modem built it.

Ok hang on, let me clarify.

I've just bought this type of wireless router:

http://netgear.co.uk/rangemax_wirelessrouter_wpn824.php

Now, this modem says is ideal for cable users, and I'm ADSL, so I think I've screwed up bad. I just bought this ethernet switch, thinking it's a DSL modem, but it isn't, so I've screwed up again. I just want to return one of the items - I need to buy a DSL modem, relatively cheap. Any recommendations?

I don't mind buying an additional DSL modem with an ethernet port, because I've heard that the WPN824 does a good job itself, whereas the WPN834 doesn't.

Hi mate,

Yes, that router is for CABLE customers, basically, when you have cable (NTL etc) you had a modem AND a router.

When you have BROADBAND, it is just an ADSL Router + Modem combined.

ANYTHING from Linksys, Belkin or Netgear (in that order) would be fine.

If you want any recommendations, for cheap is;

Netgear DG834PN 108Mbps Rangemax Wireless ADSL2

Belkin 125Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Modem/Router (F5D7633UK4A)
