NETGEAR's R7000 "Nighthawk" Most powerful Router

I don't know what should have worked really but signal strength is no different, still good of course lol.
 
My phone went from 2 bars to 3 bars with the tweak. It deffo helped mine but it's a V1 router.

From what I have read about it so far, its Big and very fast, beats pretty much anything from Asus routers including the new Asus AC68U Router also.

Its $199.99 in US

Its been out for sale in USA for past few weeks, no ETAs mentioned on the UK front as usual or UK price.

I've got a Linksys EA6700 here with a dual core Broadcom BCM4708 chip @ 1GHz... been on the market for several months. Recently picked it up on sale for £55 :D

yeah It appears the netgear missed that one, guess they not the first on the market....

Still the router they got is pretty good, the linksys still much cheaper but sadly I see no tomato/opensource or dd-wrt support via 3rd party firmwares for it, otherwise it would have been the top choice.
 
Just spotted this after seeing someone recommend the Asus AC66U or whatever it's called.

I want one. My Linksys E4200 can be a little unreliable in the 5GHz range.
 
AC68 is coming out soon, its currently 2nd fastest router going :)

Thanks for the great posts on the Netgear Nighthawk, much appreciated.
Hopefully one of you can help with my few questions.
I'm in Ireland & we have a very outdated network.
Eircom has eFibre, which is a VDSL2 network, & I'm probably moving to it soon.

I'm toying with the idea of getting the Netgear Nighthawk.
I know it's expensive, the standard isn't nailed down yet & the functionality & speed of the router isn't attainable with nearly all clients.
However I'd prefer to pay a couple hundred euro for something that will be somewhat future proof, then to pay a hundred for something that isn't.

Anyway, my question is how would I use the Netear Nighthawk with VDSL2?
What setup of router/modem etc.. would I need?

Also, when using this setup (as opposed to cable) will I lose some of the functionality & features that the Nighthawk provides?

Any help on this please?

NETGEAR make really shocking routers these days. All there new routers have pathetic WiFi range even though they are advertised as 'ultimate'. In fact, a NETGEAR DGN2000 from 2008 had better range than a NETGEAR DGND3700! The DGND4000 had very similar (poor) range, as did the WNDR4000 (I think that was it).

I'd choose Asus, as at least their routers have decent range!
 
Netgear are complete trash anything they sell is trash and thier customer service and returns is also trash. I had a few DG834V2's that all broke. One even started to smoke. I had to ring france, out of my expenses and talk to a Frenchman who cannot really talk English nevermind English with an Irish accent.


After 15 minutes and we were down to my postcode and he could not understand the last four digits so the fella just cut me off and put me into a new operator who said hello and asked me for my name and address again. I flew into a rage at him and he just kept asking for my name again. Netgear i swear to god i would actually murder whoever that Frenchie was who hung up on me.


Do not buy Netgear! French support lines!
 
I wouldn't buy a Netgear router unless I had too tbh.

And they are quite clearly copying Asus with this product.
 
Linksys are worse than Netgear, every product except 1 (which I sold on within 6 months) has died and their support is just laughable. - No wonder Cisco sold them on.

What configuration would I use for such a router on a VDSL line?

Also, with that configuration, would I lose some of the features & functionality that the router provides?

You've got to be joking. Our Asus AC-66U is one of the worst routers I have ever used. The effective range on the 5GHz is around 3 meters - I actually get WiFi dropouts in the very next bedroom to the one the router is placed in!

Then 5GHz range issue is a well known issue - which was promised to be fixed with updated broadcom drivers and new firmware. Some 12 months and 6 or 7 firmwares later, the range is worst now than it was when the device launched. I'd not recommend the thing at all.
 
so if all these brands are crap, which brand would people go with?

i've got a netgear dgn1000 & a linksys wrt610n and they're both great :confused:

Well, not in my case. My DSL-N55U had fantastic range. Probably the best out of any router I've used.
