Network Cable Crimping

Got sick of paying extortionate prices for legnths of network cable, so I've went and bought myself a couple hundred metre roll of Cat5e cable, a bunch of RJ45 plugs and a crimping tool, to do a bit of DIY cabling.

Problem is.....I dont know how to do it.

What colour wire goes on which end of the network plugs? Which order do they go in?

Anyone got a link to a cable crimping guide?

And if you want to do a cross over cable just swap the orange's for green's on one end only

For normal patch cables it doesn't actually matter which order you put the wires in. As long as both connectors are wired exactly the same it'll work.

There are 2 standards for the colours, but unless you care there no need.

It depends what you'll be connecting, but if you'll be going switch - PC then yes, crossovers will work fine as most switches will have autosensing ports.

Final question, you do trim off about 1/2 a cm of insulation from the inner wires, so they can make contact yeah?

The guide wasnt clear on that point.

No when you crimp it it will make contact.

Ah thats handy....in that case, I've just made my first 20m cable for a few pence.
