Can anyone explain why my laptop can only access the internet when connected to my router with Category 5e UTP patch cable and not Category 5 UTP patch cable?

Its not a Straight-through cable and a crossover cable is it?

Check the colours in the RJ45's are in the same order both ends.

If not the crossover is for joining 'like' devices (switch to switch).

unless its a VERY old router and laptop, that wont realy matter, because for many years, network devices have auto sensing ports, and it doesnt realy matter if its a striaght-through or crossover cable (although imo its still good practice to use the correct type of cable, even if it doesnt matter).

If the Cat5e cable works, but the Cat5 doesnt, then it could mean the connectors on the ends of the Cat5 cable may not have properly been used, or it could have been wired wrong.

Yes they do have auto-sensing ports and as you say its good practice to use the correct cable as things don't always work as they should.

There will be no difference in connectivity between Cat5e and Cat5, either its a faulty cable or the RJ45 is knackered.

how long is the Cat5?

it might be long enough that its getting too much interference?
