Network cabling - Which non-obvious places should I run cable to?

Hi all

Currently about to start running Cat 6 around the house from a central point to multiple sockets in each room as per normal practice.

I was wondering if there are any other non-obvious locations I should consider in the context of devices coming along in the future that have an IP interface? I'm thinking the following

1) Burglar alarm
2) Central heating controller
3) Thermostat

Thanks

Mike

Fairly obvious but worth mentioning anyway. I'd personally run 4 to any wall mounted TV locations for smart tv's and and HDTV over baluns.

Fridge - they have been talking about it for decades, bound to happen sometime.
Maybe other appliances like washers and dishwashers will require computer control of operation.

CCTV points around roof, doors.

Shed.

Any location where you might want to stream AV, like bathroom, patio.

If you have a NAS box, best to site it in the safest place if the house caught fire and the fire brigade fills it with water.

While I agree with above on consumer appliances being accessible via IP going forward, I would expect them to be over WIFI.

I would run cat6 to the Streaming locations and also the CCTV points also also a good idea.

I am in the process of buying a new build, and was lucky enough to get the builder to run Ethernet to all the bedrooms, dining/living room and kitchen. I also asked them to run speaker wiring to my rear surround speakers while they were at it.

I like hard wiring for anything that will be streaming, but items such as fridge, dish washer and washer/dryer I would be more than happy to run on WIFI in the future when needed.

Just my 2p :)

Edit,

Your suggestion above, thermostat and such, I would also expect to run over WIFI an Ethernet port on the device would only make it slightly larger IMHO WIFI for consumer devices is the way forward. Hard wired for streaming and moving large chunks of data around the house.

Agree, low data rate consumer devices will be wi-fi, although if they have a socket I'd always prefer to wire them in, less worry about channels.

The number of times I've wished the iPad was pluggable when it dies whenever the microwave is on, although maybe I should stop trying to carry it round the house with me all the time :o

Only other place I would add to that is a nice high up central location to locate the Wifi AP for best coverage in the house ... so your dishwasher can talk to your toaster by the looks of this thread!

Just finished doing the same job on a refurb project for a friend of mine and managed to get it high up on the central staircase, basically covered the whole (4 bed, 2 bath) house :) nicely
