Network Drive Password issue

I'm running a Windows Home Server box. I'm downloading via my media machine (Vista 32 H.Premium). I wanted the downloads to go straight to the WHS box so I mapped the directory on the Media machine - (x: )

The problem is that the WHS box is password protected and every time the media machine reboots, I have to manually input the password for the WHS box to get access to the mapped drive. Is there a clever way around this (I don't want to have to password protect the media machine - hence I haven't set up permissions for the media machine on the WHS box.)

That might just work - I'll only need to run it at startup, so a simple batch file in the startup folder should work - I'll give it a go - love the ghetto hack feel!

Is there an 'official' way to do this - annoyingly the remember password bit never works - could be because the WHS box is using the 'Default' username (naughty I know... but I'm lazy!)
 
I have a way of doing it in W2k3 and XP using local security polices, dunno if it will work in Home Server

You want to try it?
 
Would you believe the answer was as simple as reading the screen!! When mapping the network drive it gives you the option to connect as a different user, complete with password - set it up using the correct username/password and it worked out the box! :D

How silly do I feel :p
 
Also having the same user credentials on both computers will work.

I.e. Having your user name and password setup as an account on the WHS and your desktop should solve the problem

That's what I do.

The Media PC has an account on the WHS and has the WHS connector installed for backing up the system drive. Videos, Music etc are stored on the WHS instead of the MPC and the locations within MCE point to the WHS (as do the Media Player Libraries on several other machines).

I use autlogon with the MPC so it doesn't ask for a password every time Windows boots (and thus makes the spousal acceptance factor of the MPC better).

Works a treat and I know of any issues with the MPC thanks to WHS.
 
Perfect - my previous effort met with failure as for some reason Vista refuses to remember the password, even though it gives a tick box option to do exactly that - so even with the drive selected to logon with the WHS username/password, it still doesn't connect until I manually input the password :mad:

I did look at using the same Username/password across my machines, but couldn't deal with having to log into Windows with a password every time - Autologon sounds like exactly what the doctor ordered - will give it a try!
 
Right - disregard everything I've said up until now (ever I guess - it was probably all rubbish ;) )

I have what I consider to be the most elegant solution:

1. I installed the WHS connector software on my main machine.
2. I created a user account that matched the logon of that machine (username/password) - This gave me full access to the shared folders on the WHS :)
3. Finally I got rid of the need to type in my password at logon on the Vista machine courtesy of a chap on the autologon comments who suggested the following:

Worked like a charm, now have full access without having to enter passwords and my Vista machine boots without user input - winner! :D
