Hi all,

I wondered if anyone had any ideas on what questions could be asked in a formal interview for the position of a Network Engineer please?

I can think of 'The users are reporting slow network response times, what would you do about this?' how would any of you answer this please, and can you think of any more questions?

thanks!

Well you will probably need to answer questions on network protocols, routers, switches, firewalls, vlans, vpns and much more.

The title Network Engineer is a bit vague, it could mean looking after a company network/LAN and include servers/desktops or it could mean looking after a large geographical network such as a carrier or ISP. Both are very different roles and need different skillsets. Looking after a LAN means you probably dont need to know BGP/OSPF/MPLS.

Good luck anyway.

cheers, its a company network, whcih won't involve looking after any servers, just network hardware, switches hubs routers and the vlans, firewalls etc which sit on top of it.

Then they'll probably just chat to you about those topics, just to make sure you actually know what you're talking about. Maybe trying to get you to discuss the basics of how certain protocols work, maybe give you a problem they've had and see how you attack it, etc. If you know your stuff and haven't BSed too much on your CV you should be fine.

depends really, on how advanced their network is and what equipment they use. Could be anything from your 'users are complaining it's slow' question to 'how would you configure hsrp on a router?'

If they're looking for someone for networks alone, I'd expect it's a reasonably sophisticated environment, so I'd expect some cisco questions and some questions regarding whatever firewall they like...

did they mention any qualifications they'd like in the job spec, if so they'll likely lift questions straight out of those...
