Hello

I am trying to allow this computer to connect to my other pc so i can get some files off of it.

I have set both subnet masks to "255.255.255.0". I have set the ip's to "192.168.1.*"

They are both set to be on the work group "MSHOME".

For some reason, i cannot connect between each other to browse files etc.

I did this a few months ago, but have since reformatted and now have a new modem / router if that makes any difference.

Can anyone suggest some help.

P.S. Wasnt sure if this was the right place, its more of a windows problem, dons please move if appropriate

Edit: I have browsed the work group, but the other pc does not appear there, its the same if ido it on the other pc. Also, the name of the pc is "home" so i tried going to run and typing \\home" doesnt find it tho.

Im a bit drunk atm, so ive probably missed something vital :p

Have you set BOTH pC's to the same IP perhaps ?

Sounds like you're trying to go PC to PC with no router - if that's right then make sure you have LAN cable with a CROSSOVER in it. "Normal" LAN cable is BRG<->PC. Check your LAN i/f to see if you can swap it round.

firstly ensure "simple file sharing" is disabled on both machines ... my computer > tools > options > folder options > view > then scroll to bottom and untick, apply and REBOOT any machine you unticked it on

Then as someone said above ... start > run > then type either the pc name or ip address for example:

\\pcnames\sharename or \\192.168.1.2\sharename or connect to the root of c \\pcname\c$

you'll be prompted for a local login if you dont automatically authenticate to the other machine

merry xmas

ive sorted it now, the other pc appeared a bit after that post, but this morning with a fresh un alcholic mind :p i figured out norton was blocking it, disabled that which sorted it fine.
