I've got a problem with mates laptop i've been given to fix and it's doing my head in so any advice from you clever lot would be great.
Basically it just won't connect to the internet through wireless or wired adapters, it finds the wireless modem but just says page cannot be displayed etc.
When i go to repair connection it comes up with the message
"www.microsoft.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port "world wide web server (HTTP)" with this computer ??

I've tried reinstalling adapters, resetting network protocols and internet options with no, joy any ideas?

it's using windows vista btw.

Nope didn't work :( no programs ie windows defender will auto updat either so there must be a problem with either the network protocols or the adpater.
Just strange it does it with the wireless adapter and the lan the connection
so i'm thinking it must be the the network setings.
Does anyone kow how to reset your network protocols back to default or refresh them?

At the moment it's connected through lan to my netgear dg384 but i've tried another laptop round his house and his modem worked fine so it's a problem with this laptop.

Dont want to sound obvious but have you turned off any firewalls.

can you ping the router (im guessing so as the DHCP has assigned you an IP) or any other page? Sounds like the HTTP is being blocked, is it possible it could be some sort of malicous code?

My host name in my pc says dyna_rod's pc so host nmae seems fine aswell
hmmmmm bit stumped now if you network experts can't find anything wrong
then i don't think i can fix it....oo well format time :)

host name isn't hosts file - which lives at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
