I'm looking for something that will play all manner of music or video streamed from my desktop PC. I like the sound of the WD TV Live as it's got an optical output so I can connect it to my AV amp.

Are there any better alternatives in that sort of price range or even a bit more?

Thanks

I've ditched my xtreamer box now that I've got a samsung freeview box with dlna client built in and ps3 media server at the back end.

I'm using my PS3 at the moment which is fine but I find that the streaming video freezes every now and then and doesn't seem to want to play everything that I have. Also I want a streamer without Cinavia.

I've got a Sumvision Cyclone MKV HD Media Player. Love it.

In fact I've got 2, one in the lounge which is an hdd enclosure as well. And one in the bedroom which is just a media streamer.

Both have played everything I've thrown at them.

Thanks for the other suggestions. I will have an HTPC eventually but for the time being a small box that I can move from room to room is ideal. I did look at the Sumvision players and they looked tempting for the price but the WD is on its way now. Just missed the postman on my way out this morning so hopefully I'll have it up and running tomorrow.

I've already programmed my Logitech Harmony for its arrival! :)

Hi, can you let me know your opinion on the WD Live please after you've received it and had a good play around with it. Considering buying two before Christmas for my mum & sister, also possibly me too to replace my boxee.
I bought both (mum & sister) 2 years ago a xenta media streamer thing from an 'e' place on the net and well them things were a complete waste of money, now looking for a replacement for them (possibly the WD Live) if you give it the thumbs up.

No worries. I have been using it since yesterday but not had it long enough to give my opinion but I'll post here In due course :) All I can say for now is that it's good but it's not perfect!

I did read on the rain forest place where customers have given their reviews and a lot have said that the WD Live doesn't much like USB HDD's.

ive 2 of these beasts BOTH running with usb hdd's, no problems (upto now)...
1x2.5 320gb drive(bedroom) and 1x1tb drive(living room)..:D

Looked at loads of options including XBMC and settled on a WD live - can't fault it for the money. Idiot-proof and plays everything I throw at it and it's connected to a portable 1Tb USB HDD too with no problems :)

I have a wdtv live, and a popcorn hour a100, and now an Acer revo running xbmc. Whilst using the wdtv live I noticed audio sync issues when using the optical out. You can adjust this on the fly which is nice but also a pain when it is nearly every mkv. Should be fixed by firmware update which are regular.

Portable as in USB powered by the WD Live.. Only asking as like I said, I read on the rain forest place reviews that the WD Live has had problems with portable HDD's not being able to fully power the HDD from the WD live box.
