Hey mates,

Gonna build a new computer soon for my room and will be needing a wireless network setup as we have 3 computer in the house. I dont know anything about networking really and wasnt sure what to get.

I have a 10mb NTL connection with there normal cable modem.

Something good and realiable needed to set up with 3 computers, but no over the top pricing?

Any help appreciated

A Dlink DI-524 Router and 3 x Wireless PCI Cards / Wireless USB Dongles In each machine should do it... (any make will do i guess, Linksys / Netgear / Belkin. providing its a cable router not ADSL)

plug ya cable modem into the WAN port of the router... goto config page, clone the MAC of your Cable Modem... thats more or less it for the internet conection... everything else will be set to automatic and default settings which should get you up and running. you can then configure it to how you wish, static ip / block/open certain ports etc etc

then just configure your wireless settings, SSID, WEP/WPA encryption as you wish

Looking about £40-50 for router and £20 a piece for wireless cards

:)

You don't even need to clone the MAC address, just:

  • disconnect the modem and switch it off
  • switch it back on
  • wait for the lights to settle down
  • hook it up to your new router

I'd suggest the Linksys WRT54GL (or a WRT54G/GS, as long as you can be sure it isn't a v5) for the range of (feature enhancing) third party firmware but as said, as long as it's not an ADSL router, you should be mostly fine.

Recommend D-Link DI-624 (plain NOT plus) Cable/DSL router (here/datasheet). Picked up one for less than £20 from that famous auction site. Served me well for 4-months in a six (6) bedroom house with 3-pcs sharing net (NTL) & files. My PC was upstairs at the back of the house & reception was good. Still using it now to share a ADSL connection/modem after moving back home from uni house & works ok ;)

This might be useful :D - recommend WiFi PCI cards over USB WiFi dongle/adapter, but the latter are also very handy to have around

I see OC'ers have a WRT54G/GS, was wondering if it was a v5 (dno what v5 is) was going to go for this one if its all good.

The v5 is the lobomised version that runs a VXWorks firmware, has less RAM and flash and gets not-so-glowing reviews.
On the other hand, versions 1-4 run linux and you can stick non-Linksys firmware on them.

I doubt anyone's still selling pre-v5 WRT54G/GS routers any more.
