network newb!! please help!!

i have been trying to set up a network between 2 pc's connecting thru a router. 1 of them is a laptop the other is a desktop pc, i can get both to connect to the net using the router no problem but i would really love to be able to access files on the pc from the laptop.

i have set both the pc and laptop to the same WORKGROUP

the pc's IP is 192.168.1.3

the laptops is 192.168.1.2

to simply get files from the pc with the laptop do i just type in the explorer 192.168.1.2 ??

when i do this it comes up with page not found.

i have windows xp
the router im using connects to the pc thru USB and the laptop connects to the router with a straight through ethernet cable.

No. You use either \\192.168.1.2, or \\[Machine's name]

Can they ping each other or anything (start, run, cmd, ping [ip address])?
Firewalls?

i just tried that ping thing, 4 packets sent, 4 recieved, 0 lost

all the windows firewalls are off, should i disable the router firewall?

Err, that sounds like it's looking for a web page.
You are putting this into either the address box in Windows Explorer (or the start, run) dialogue, not Internet Explorer?
What do you get from My Network Places?

excellent, its working now (think i was using / instead of \

but i can only get hold of (shared files)

is their a way of getting to files in my C:

or would i have to drag and drop all the files i wanna share into the shared folder??
