Network not up to speed?

Best way is to have one big central switch, with multiple cables going to each room. Patch panel at the central point and wall modules in the rooms.
 
Cheers, I'll give that a go if I move house...to be honest it works well at the moment, I'm happy with 60-90 MBs, it's just under 10 MBs was painfully slow. It ended up like this is I only connected one cat 5 from down stairs to upstairs and then branched off the cable to all rooms.

Not all gigabit network interfaces are actually capable to hitting 110MB/s. Really old ones and those in network attached storage typically can't hit line rate.
Gigabit uses all 8 wires. 100base-t uses 4. One of the wires in your cable is probably damaged or not connected in the plug which is why it was going slow.
