I have a new machine on my network, however when I tried to access it, it asks for a password.

There was no password set for this machine yet I am still prompted to enter it.

Same for the 2nd and main machine on the network.
Both running XP Pro

Any ideas?

Have you tried setting up a password for sharing, maybe if you do you can then turn it off later, i can't remember if xp pro had extra setting for access, probably does but i only got xp home.

By default windows xp will use your current credentials.... and password to authenticate to the remote machine. If there is an identical user and password on the other machine and there is at least 1 share or an administrative share such as c$ all should work fine. By default with winxp pro you cannot authenticate to a remote machine with a blank password, even if the usernames on the two machines match. To get around this you need to do the following;

start>run

type in gpedit.msc (then press ok or hit return)
Navigate to the key below....
By default it is set to enabled, meaning blank passwords can oly be used to authenticate locally, obviously setting it to disabled means anyone with a matching username such as administrator with a blank password can now access your machine freely..

Hope this helps?
