Hi All

Having recently taken a role in my company as Desktop Support Analyst i thought it was about time i really got to grips with the finer details of networking. Now most things I', able to do at work but we have a much more complex and better designed infrastructure than i do at home!

It seems i have fallen at the first hurdle somewhat.

Scenario -

I have 3 Desktop machines in the house, 2 laptops and a NAS(wip). I want (for the moment) to share my 1TB Media HDD in my main PC. Sharing is not a problem, its setting the permissions that im having problems with. For now only concentrate on my PC and one of the Laptops. I have set the 1TB Media drive to be shared and given it a name. (\\Tom-PC\Music and Film)
I now want to set permissions, so that only certain users regardless if they try and access the drive from the local machine (Tom-PC) or from the laptop. When i go to:
Advance Sharing > Permissions > Add i only have the option to search users from TOM-PC. The box is inactive so i cant change it to LAPTOP and then have it search for local users on the laptop. I have a few ideas as to why its not working but no solutions!

My guess is that Windows Homegroup doesnt share any user id information. Is the only way around this to setup a server running AD in something like VMware? If so a step by step guide we be greatly appreciated!

Anyone care to help?

That's because you don't have a domain set up at home. This is what allows enterprises to manage all users permissions under one roof.

You can get around this by creating local accounts on the server PC (tom-pc) and giving them permissions, then from the client PC you can access the share as a remote user, insert "tom-pc\user1" as the username.

Il second that!! Lovely pics mate!

Back on topic ;)

Id rather do it the hard way, its all part of me learning so lets make it as complex as it has to be!

In that case im guessing a VM box running Windows Server 2003/8 on with AD installed should do the trick? I was looking to make a DIY NAS drive anyway, so i could install the VM running Windows Server on that.

Feel free to add any good resources that might help me otherwise il have a go and come back when i run into trouble!

Petri.co.il have some good tutorials on installing and configuring server 2008, Active Directory, DNS etc that will get you started.

If you are looking at building a custom NAS type box then I would highly recommend looking at the HP Microservers as an alternative. You could just install server directly onto this and configure that as your AD while having upto potentially 6 internal HDD's connected to it (4 HDD bays plus 2 HDD's in the CD bay with one drive connected to the esata port on the back).

It would allow you much more flexibility than a standard NAS :)
