Network Priority?

Evening all,

Now this is something I know nothing about so please excuse if I'm talking rubbish...

Over Christmas the house has become 2 Amazon Fire sticks better off, but since then the internet on my PC has gotten a lot worse, to the point where Skype drops out and online games lag like a *****

Can I do some trickery that will prioritise the PC over the TV?

Or do you have any other suggestions?

Many thanks :)

It sounds like you could do with a router that has Quality of Service (QoS) options.

A few questions:
  • ISP?
  • Type of broadband?
  • Speed of broadband?
  • Current router?

Hi Bremen,
ISP is Sky
Type- Unlimited (not fibre though)
Speed- last night 13ms ping 3Mb up 0.9Mb down
Tonight 33ms ping 12Mb up 1.2Mb down
Current router is just the std one they supplied.

If you have the same one I did a few years ago it doesn't have any QOS function. Sky is a little non standard in that they don't like people using their own routers so they don't give you a username and password. It was quite easy to extract that info when I had one so you could use any old router. The alternative is to play a router in between you and the sky one but that would be less ideal as you would be double NATing which may affect some games. The majority of third party routers support QOS and it'll be on the features list, i'm a fan of the asus ones.

I would have no idea what I am doing though ie I would have to learn about QoS and how it works first... I have had a read and I do agree it would perhaps help out here though...

Do I have any other options? Nothing I can do from the computer end?

Sky's router or home hub do not support QoS, there is nothing from the PC you can do to prioritise your traffic, and as the Fire Sticks are Wi-Fi a basic managed switch wont help either. You will have to either change router or use two routers (do not recommend).

I've not tried it, but you may be able to turn off DHCP on the Sky Hub, and turn off the Wi-Fi, and then plug a router into a LAN port of the Sky Hub and use that as your router with DHCP.

Looks like I'm gonna have to pull my finger out, get my house finished and move back out of my parents house :(
