hello,
having some dns problems i think

i have my main computer connected to the net. it works fine, i can ping (and access) ips and domains. (this computes ip on the network is 192.168.0.2)

another comptuer is connected via a crossover cable. this can ping ips, but not domains.(this computes ip on the network is 192.168.0.3)

what settings do i need to change? i've tried setting the dns server on the second computer to the ip of the first, but it doesn't help.

thanks

yeh i think so

if i get the ip for google.com, i can ping it (and access it in IE) on the second computer. Just can't access google.com via its domain...

Edit - i've just noticed something
I can ping from second computer to main, and get a reply
I can't ping from main to second (they time out)

check what your windows firewall is blocking
check what your AV is blocking etc.
tbh you're so much better off with a router modem setup! they are about £30 from OcUK and make life so much easyer! ICS for the lose. also it meens you can dump the local firewalls.

You need to set the DNS server address on the second machine to be the same as the DNS server address being used by the first.

Setting it to the IP of the first machine won't work because that machine isn't running a DNS Server.

Ok i got it working now :)

I found what dns servers i was using on my main computer and set it as that

But ... it only works if on my main computer zone alarm is set to Medium (for internet zone security/trusted zone security)

How can i make it so i can still have it on high?

Is it something to do with zones?

What do i add?

Zonealarm have introduced a bug in ine of their updates. I always turn off the firewall and immediately reload it from the start menu after every reboot. I noticed it after moving house and switching to a wireless card after years of Cat 5 connection. Don't know if it only applies to wireless cards. Tech support on zonelabs website sent me this..

Hello Dave,

Thank you for contacting Zone Labs Technical Support.

I understand that you are having an issue with ZoneAlarm blocking your
internet access when you start up your system and shutting down and
restarting ZoneAlarm will allow you access.

There may be a problem with your TrueVector service. ZoneAlarm is
dependent on its TrueVector service to function properly. You may need to
refresh the files associated with this service, especially after a networking
change, OS change, or ZoneAlarm update. First, check in the upper right- hand corner of the ZoneAlarm Window. You should see an All Systems
Active message in green letters (to the right of the lock). If the panel is
displaying All systems Active and ZoneAlarm is still not functioning
properly, it is possible that some files have become corrupt.

To repair this problem, please follow these steps. Please note that this will
remove your program permission settings (so you may want to make note
of them), but re-establishing them is a simple process. If any of the steps
below does not apply to you, or you are unable to perform the function
listed, please continue to the next step.

** NOTE - Beginning with ZA version 4, you can create a Backup of your
settings, and then restore them afterwords. See the local ZoneAlarm Help
files for specifics.

1.) Reboot your system into Safe Mode. The method is determined by
your OS but normally either tapping the F8 key about once per second as
your computer is booting up, or holding the control key during boot up
works.

For more information on rebooting in Safe Mode, click Start, then Help.
Click the Search tab, and type in SAFE MODE

2.) Open the Internet Logs directory (in 98SE/ME this will be
c:windows\internet logs, in 2000 it will be c:winnt\internet logs, in Windows
XP it could be either of these folders). Use My Computer or Windows
Explorer to navigate to the folder.

3.) Delete all files that have the extension .RDB, .LDB, or TMP.

4.) Empty your Recycle Bin.

5.) Reboot your system.

When the system restarts, you may get some ZoneAlarm configuration
screens. This is normal and is a result of clearing the program's log files.
