Network setup query?

Hi guys,

Trying to work out the best way to sort out my home broadband/network. Which ever direction I take, I want to increase my transfer speeds of my hardwired units (2 x laptops & 1 x WD MyCloudMirror NAS).

Currently they are connected to my Sky SR102 Modem/Router which is only 100Mbits, I want to make this 1Gbit as I regularly share files between all 3 devices, so my question is this:

If I connect the Sky hub to a NETGEAR GSS108E-100EUS ProSAFE 8-Port Gigabit Click Switch and then connect the 3 devices I mentioned above to the switch, can I get internet to all 3 thru wired and then would these 3 now communicate via Gbit speeds (ie. the Sky hub's 100Mb connection has no bearing on the other units apart from the internet speed & wireless?)

That's right - if everything is connected via the Gigabit switch then they'll all run at Gigabit speed when communicating with each other. It'll only drop to 100Mb/s when going through the Sky router (ie, accessing the internet)

Does anyone have an opinion on the Netgear switch listed in the OP?

Want a really solid switch build & performance wise, so I'm open to ideas?
 
There isn't much in it as far as unmanaged switches go. If you really need something that can go head to head with a chieftain tank then an HP Procurve 1400-8g would be the order of the day, buy really a £20 tp-link will be fine.
 
Not to be a party pooper, but have you checked that your laptops are Gb ?

I still see laptops for sale now which are still only 100Mb so I thought I'd check!
