Network speed testing software?

Can anyone recommend some free software to test the speeds between my PC and my router? I've recently bought some powerline adapters and want to see the difference that they make, but can't get the software working on Windows 7

Speed testing is done by sending file x from pc a to pc b and timing it, how do you do it between pc and router?
