Network storage - help needed

Hi

I hope I'm posting in the right place.

Recently I purchased a Seagate Central 4TB which I used to automatically back-up (via time machine) my MBP and Mac Air and loaded other items on it e.g. films so I could watch them via my TV.

This was attached to my router via ethernet cable. This worked well for 6 weeks and then stopped being able to connect via ethernet, at this point I also found out that there was no easy to get my data off the hard drive without this connection.

I am hoping to get some advice about networked storage as I do like to have it working in the background over wireless (this isn't my only back-up), but it should be hassle free and reliable and I need to be able to get into it via other methods.

I went for the Seagate Central as it appeared to be an all in-one solution, but perhaps they are not reliable and putting something together myself would be better.

I have looked at stuff online, but I'm a bit lost so if I could be pointed in the direction of fairly simple details of how to put a drive together and perhaps some suggestions that would be great.

Edit:

My router is a DSL-AC68U
