Hi all,

I have a Macbook that I want to back up using time machine, but I don't want to buy another time capsule from Apple as they tend to fail on me. Can anyone recommend a good network drive that I can use to automatically back up data but also store music/movies and steam games on? Also, would I be able to stream movies and steam games from a network drive wirelessly?

PS I have a couple of 2TB 3.5" HDD already from a previous PC.

Thanks! :)

Get a little atom box/HP microserver and roll your own in Linux, install Plex for all your media needs

(quick google showed this up as a guide for creating a timemachine on debian/ubuntu

If you are wanting something quick and easy to set up and on a budget then the share centre from D-link will do all that you need.

it supports time machine back up and can run as your iTunes server if needed. It will take 2 SATA drives and will raid them for you as well. It is quick and easy to set up as well. Plus it is on offer at the moment for £44.99 on pre-order. Stock due tomorrow.

Fantastic, but could you explain to me the differences between the D-link NAS and this one by Synology http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-018-SY

Thanks

Interesting thread as I decided to build my first network storage solution as well.
The price on this D-Link is great but I think I will go with Synology Diskstation DS213J as I am reading only great stuff about it. I will run 2 hdds in Raid 1. I have already brand new 3 TB Toshiba but everybody recommends WD Reds. It will be cheaper for me to buy another Toshiba hdd than sell Toshiba and buy 2x WD Reds. Is it really a bad idea to Raid Toshiba hdds instead of WD Reds?

Hi BrotherMuzone.

The difference between the two would come down to the processor and memory used to control the software that runs the storage server. The Synology one will be more powerful but it all depends on what you are going to be using it for and how many people will be accessing it at the same time. Also depends on your budget.

The Synology has great reviews and is in budget. Would I be able to use two HDDs, one for a time machine backup and the other for general storage ? i.e. no RAID 0/1?

From what I read so far you can setup them manually, so yes. What I plan to do is having 2 hdds in raid 1 and external usb hdd for backing them up. I have lost 1TB Samsung full of movies, music and other cool stuff:-( so I am going to be more careful this time.
