Network usage, monitoring help..

Hi

I have two pc's networked via my broadband router, One PC for general use and the other as a media center.

I want to be able to monitor my dl & ul usage, the problem is that when using DU meter/netmeter etc, the transfers between pc's is always added onto the overall usage. which means that if i transfer 1gb of pics etc from pc-pc it looks like i have downloaded that amount from the internet thus giving me no way to gauge true internet usage.

Is there any way to monitor only my internet usage, and not monitor my transfers between pc's?

Thats because it cant distinguish what is interesting traffic.

The only way I can think of as a way to get around this is to install an additional network card / wireless network card and monitor this. Have one doing the pc to pc work and one doing the surfing.

Not a great solution but it would do the job.

my main pc has two network ports, if i ran a cable directly between both pc's, then have only my main pc connecting to the router would these apps be able to distinguish between the two?

It probably wouldn't work without some jiggerypokery, because you'd have two interfaces going to the same place, with nothing to differentiate them.

Depending on the router, it might give you figures.

i was hoping that as the MB's network ports show as realtek 0 & realtek 1, i might be able to configure DU meter etc to only take figures from either of these rather than both.. hmm

I would've advised you to just look through your router stats first, since it'll give you exact readings of your Internet usage. The only downside to this would be that the stats would probably reset each time your router resets/your IP address gets renewed, but if you check it pretty often then it wouldn't really be much of a concern. For example, here are my usage stats from the homehub:

unfortunately the dg834gt doesnt give you these stats, i think even if it did it would also combine net usage with pc-pc transfers

I've yet to see a router that counted intra-network transfers as part of the data transferred on the WAN interface.
The third-party firmware for the DG834GT might be useful if it enables SNMP.
