Ok my mate has just moved in 4 doors down from me, unfortunately we cannot see each others wireless network due to the position of the houses i guess.

We both have Virgin 20MB broadband but want to share our files and stuff.

I intend to run a cat5 cable to interconnect the networks, but i am unsure as to how to set the routers up, 1 is a Linksys WRT54G and the other a Netgear WPN824.

Any advise would be most appreciated

I love the idea of this.:)

I do think you might have issues actuly running this cable between the your houses. ( i have images in my mind of you laying cat5 cables in the dead of night under your neighbours lawn!!:p)

How far away this your mates house?

Cat5 cable can only run 100 meters or so before needing a repeater. (longer distance can be reached but you'd get pop up errors and ramdom network drop outs.)

as for the network setup, you have 3 options. (that i know of)

1, use another router as a bridge and bridge your two networks together, making one but still keeping your own 'in house' networks. - you'd still both have your own internet connection.

2, use a VPN and connect via the tin'er web. not ideal if you entend to share films and large files.

3, both of you get another network card and use a crossover cable to link your two pc's.

this is just my opinion and i could be wrong but i thought i'd give my 2 cents anyway.

let us know how it goes. ;)

VPN is blatently the easiest option unless you can get permission to run the cat5 across the garden.

doing this with the inlaws next door,

just a big cat5 cable if under 100m

either that or get friendly with some more of the neighbours and join them up :)

This is something I may be looking to do soon, how would you go about configuring everything, such as the routers so that you only used your own internet connection.

Well the distance of the cable im planning to run is close to 100m, and i have a very cunning plan to run this cable. If that dont work then im going to have to go the wireless route.

I have no idea how to setup / configure the routers. But from what your saying i would need another router, i was hoping it would just be a case of linking the 2 routers we have atm with the cat5 (is this not possible?)

As sp00n said.

That does also make a nice back up if one of your internet connections goes down, simply change the gateway to the other router connected to the net, and your back up and running.

as for setting up a bridge, plug in a cable from each router, set to router to bridge mode (in router settings) and jimmeys your mothers brother......

You could use the WAN port of your router to connect to your friend's gateway (ie his router). But then you wouldn't be able to use your own connection simultaneously, hence the access point suggestion.

sadly no.

but having a bridge does have it's plus points. The router it's self woudn't cost that much, and you could set it up so your mate can only see the PC's files\folders that you'd like him to.

care to explain a little :)

If you can run cable to his house, I would disable the DHCP on both routers, connect a single cat5e/cat6 to both routers and set the routers addresses like:

House1 - 192.168.1.1
House2 - 192.168.1.2

Then set the workstations with static addresses but making sure each house's computers points to the required router. That should do the trick enabling you to share files between houses!
