Network with a Neighhbour HOW?

Run two cables, one a wire from your network to his house and one from his network to your house.

Keeps things separate, and handy if you've got two network connections on your mobo (or two NICs) as you can enable/disable at will.

I could deal with that but would that cause issue's for the girls with the lappys when they take em to work / uni and stuff

Then how about see if you can leave DHCP server on at one side but tell the other person to use their own dns statically? (Bare in mind they don't have kids or wanting to take stuff from their house).

But then i wont be able to see the whole networks will i?

Sorry for all the questions but its spinning my melon man

Yeah you will, the IP35 Pro has got two NICs. One for your network, one for his.

Of course it's only really handy if he's got the same - i.e two network connections on one PC.

but its spinning my melon man

haha I know how you feel.

Yeh, quite simply you will get IP's from DHCP but your friend 4 doors down would be static. Just point his DNS to his own router and will solve all the fuss. This is however aslong as he don't take computers in and out his house.

failing all of that.....

get a bridge and you can still have DHCP on both routers allowing you to have laptop's and other devices taken in and out of both houses.

just make sure it has the right capabilites, other wise it's nice and easy!!

you still have yet to explain how you entend to run this 100 meter Cat5 cable though other people's gardens!!!!!

ok you've got 3 options

1) you combine your networks so you're both on the same one. This is andrew1984's suggestion. Slight problem with this method however is you (or he) will be using the others internet connection. are you ok with this ? if so thats the easiest

2) keep your networks separate, but have a bridge. In theory then whenever you need to access his stuff, the traffc should hop across networks

3) create a vpn which you connect only when you want to share stuff. (more difficult)

Ask permission or over the roof haha! You probably can't to be honest unless your really friendly with the neighbours. :p

Nope, why when you can just point the DNS to the right router and if they are both cable/dsl connections your fine! Its acctually a good way to have 2 internet connections :)

its not DNS thats the problem, its the traffic

Your setup involves one router right. your effectively turning the 2nd router into a switch using your setup. Setting manual IPs and single DNS servers does nothing to get round the problem of the inability to have different default gateways on the same network. Or they wont talk to each other.

that or you use the public land around houses and pavements,

council might have somthing to say.

I've got a mate lives about 10 miles from here, u think BT will let me use thier kerb side boxes for a few repeaters??? :D:D

I think your method would work well, but in the intrest of keeping automatic IP's and the ease they bring to laptop's and such, i reakon a bridge is best. (but what do i know:rolleyes:)

really? is it true you can't have more than one gateway on the network, even if all pc's are set up for either one or the other???

it wont work

for PCs to talk to each other they need the same default gateway. Change the default gateway, and you change which router the internet traffic goes out of.

you could possibly have each person having the default gateway set to their own, but then how does one know the other exists ?

Only way to have each person use their own internet and only use the other persons network when required would be to have dual network cards with different default gateways as suggested by somebody else.

just thought of another way, you could possibly set it up by static routing.

That way they will know to not use the default gateway for the traffic destined for the other persons network. This isnt viable in large scale applications usually, but with such a small network (only 2 or 3 IPs to route) it shouldnt be too complicated.
