Hey guys, basically i'm looking for a piece of software or a way of how to share files and folders across my home network but so they back up automatically when new files are added. (essentially a home 'dropbox')

Is there anyway to do this?

FreeFileSync has a real-time syncing component called, errr, RealtimeSync - I haven't used this functionality myself, but it might be worth checking out (the details are in the included helpfile).

Dropbox itself will make use of a LAN connection when it's available (just tick "Enable LAN Sync" in preferences), but you're still limited to 2GB with the free version.

RealTimeSync (Part of FFS as stated above) works brilliantly. I have 4 RTS set up to run upon start up and monitor certain folders for changes and then perform syncs based on that. One example I use RTS for is:

I use Ketarin to keep a large collection of downloadable setup files up to date with their latest versions so I have RTS keep an eye out for whenever I plug in my external USB HDD and to copy of the changes so I always have the latest setups for applications with me.

Windows Live Mesh is excellent at doing this

It ties to your hotmail/msn account (I think any email address can be registered for it), so you can login on multiple PC's and have them all sync specific folders with each other

Very easy to use

^rctneil, that's exactly what I use it for, keeping latest copies of certain setup files up to date

Agreed, Windows Live Mesh is great. I just implemented it on my home PC's. Its lovely having a dekstop and laptop with the same files on each which can sync anytime as long as theres a connection.

Thumbs up to Microsoft on that one.

I've never really used Live Mesh - does it have an option to sync directly across a LAN, which I think is what the OP requires?

Does freefilesync/realtimesync work cross platform? So for instance, i install FFS on my pc and set the two locations as one on the windows machine and the other one on my Mac?
