Hi there, I have my xbox 360 hard-wired to my XP MCE machine and it works flawlessly, however I need more space and dont want to start mucking about with the guts of my PC so I was thinking networked HD.

Seen this in the ocuk shop....

http://www.freecom.com/ecProduct_detail.asp?ID=1935&nr=24359&prodn=Classic+SL+Network+Drive+250+GB

If I connected this to one of the ports on my router would I be able to stream stuff to the xbox ok?

I know it seems like an obvious question but the media centre extender is quite, picky as some of you may know!

Cheers :)

Actually just realised usb 2.0 is supposed to be 480Mb/s at best...

So thats not gonna be a bottleneck, therefore am I as well getting a regular external usb 2.0 drive?

That drive won't do it, don't buy it

I don't have time to explain right now but look for an external drive with a built in uPnP server.

me again :)

If you connect the external disk to you MCE PC then just a disk in a USB enclosure will do.

If connecting to anything else not running MCE then you'll need to install a UPnP server, e.g. Windows Media Connect, TwonkyMedia.

Only MCE will give you video, a UPnP server will only allow the X360 to stream Music and Pictures.

If you want a PC free solution to stream music and photos there are a couple of things you could try.

1) An MP3 player connected to the USB port. Works well with my Creative Zen Micro.

2) A NAS box with TwonkyMedia, see compatable devices here

I'm using a Linksys NLSU2 with Twonky Media and a 40GB 2.5" hard disk, cost <£80 for the NLSU2, used disk and USB2 enclosure for the disk. The NLSU2 has enough power on the USB port to power external disk.

I'd like to stream HD material to my xbox, so I was thinking along the lines of a firewire external drive, but I was worried that the Media center on the xbox wouldt see the shared folder.

I tried to share my 1GB memory stick on my PSP with the xbox and even though I added it as a shared folder in the extender, I could not 'see' it whilst on the xbox :/

I know thats not exactly the same thing...

I was kinda hoping someone has done the external drive/firewire thing.

Cheers btw :)

Read my post again, you can't just create a network share and the X360 will see it. You need MCE as your OS if you want video.

Been a few months since i got rid of my MCE PC and then MCE 2005 didn't support HD video. Can the X360 now stream HD video from and MCE PC?

As you MCE and X360 setup already do what you need it's easy enough to just add a new hard disk.

yeah think we got our wires crossed here,

I have MCE 2005 on my PC, I can stream my HD stuff to the xbox 360 and it plays it fine, without a hitch. I'm just running out of room and dont have any more sata ports on my mobo (or enough juice of that matter) So I was thinking about adding more space. Ignore all the networking HD stuff, It will be going through the PC anyway :)
